WESTPORT, CN, USA -- Despite the fighting in Lebanon, English rock band Deep Purple says that it plans to perform at the Baalbek Music Festival outside of Beirut later this year.
A press release from the band confirmed that Deep Purple would indeed honor its July 28 performance near the war-torn city, also promising an immediate makeup date should the festival's promoter choose to cancel the show.
Deep Purple is currently one-quarter of the way through a planned two-year world tour and to date has not canceled a single show, a trend that it hopes to continue.
Ian Gillan, lead singer of the legendary band, said that the band's commitment is driven by the idea that music is the universal language of the world and through its hopes to honor the loyalty of its fans through performing.
"There is a moment that begins on stage, when there are no managers, no journalists, no outside distractions - just the band and the audience," Gillan said in the release. "This is the time when there is an unspoken exchange of energy between the fans and us that words can not describe. That makes all the other parts of the job worth it."
Oh stop, I'm just having fun. I'm a longtime Deep Purple fan; I can sing all the lyrics to 'Machine Head' backwards and forwards. Including the dumb ones to "Smoke On The Water".
"Funky & Claude was running in and out"
That would be 'were', Ian. I don't know what a Funky & Claude is, but it's defintely a plural.
I believe it was Deep Purple's 'Come Taste the Band'that sucked me in...I was so impressed with Bolin that I went out and purchased 'Post Toastee' and 'Teaser'. 'Bang' followed shortly thereafter. I have a live Purple album that features a cover of Bolin's 'Wild Dogs'. Great music.
ROTFLMAO!!!
I've seen the new lineup twice in recent years
Gillan
Glover
Lord/Airey
Pace
Steve Morse on Guitar
Great band. Latest albums have taken different musical turns, but the are consummate musicians
The song is about a Frank Zappa and The Mothers show in Montreux, Switzerland, which was held in at the Montreux Casino on Lake Geneva. A person fired a Very pistol into the air and the flare lodged in the ceiling, short-circuiting the electrical wiring and catching the Casino on fire and burning it to the ground. The Mothers' equipment was destroyed, the crowd panicked and rushed the stage to get to the exits and several people were blown through a large window, but the three thousand people in attendance escaped and no one was killed.
Deep Purple were at the show and they returned to their hotel and watched the spectacle from a safe distance as the flames shot up hundreds of feet into the air and smoke plumed across Lake Geneva due to the wind from the surrounding mountains.
The song makes perfect sense.
They are great musicians. Ritchie is missed, but the band seems so much more happy with Morse.
When Ritchie was on his game, no one could match him. Problem for the last few years with them, he didn't want to be on his game
His brother ,Johnny, plays drums for Black Oak Arkansas, unfortunately Jim Dandy's voice is shot to hell.He didn't age well either.Too bad.Black Oak was the shit back in their hey day.Still listen to the old stuff. There's a CD outcalled "Tommy Bolin and Friends Live at Ebbets Field that smokes. You might want to give it a listen if you can find it.I just stumbled across it and jam out to it all the time.
He is doing Medieval music with his present wife. Mainly acoustical, but he teases with the electric sometimes.
There have been many rumors of reunions with Rainbow and Dio, but I think the two egos clash a bit
I hear the IAF will be providing the light show with the help of IDF targeting lasers.

Ian Gillan recently celebrated his 60th Birthday
Ronnie James Dio.
Caught him live a couple of years back. Man on the Silver Mountain and Rainbow in the Dark bring the house down.
Oh for goodness' sakes. I know the whole damn story of the Montreaux fire incident, what I'm taking Ian Gillan to task for is his grammar and mangling of the English language.
Another killer fusion album.
"smoke on the water, fire in the sky"
How is that possible?
which sounds an awful lot like you haven't a clue about the song, the incident or nature.
And really, there's no need to swear. Good luck with your future.
I can hear the pick scratching down the string ..... LOL ....
They are blurry and a long long ways away. I was doing it from memory, and a lot of the short term is long gone...LOL
First concert I ever saw, back in 1974.
"Lazy" and "Space Truckin'" are my favorites.
I listen to it every couple of days. Classic, the best version, imho.
