Not really. Ignoring the "food" part, it's the private ownership of the animals that protects the species. "Public ownership" of any asset, including animals or the environment, tends to result in the decay of that asset. If the animal doesn't belong to any particular person, then there is no one with a vested interested in protecting and breeding the species...
