I had decent food exactly twice, and both at the hands of the Navy.

During "wet net" training, we spent a few days off the coast on some old APA, but the food still beat the hell out of any land based messhall at Camp Pendleton.

The other was the Naval Hospital at Pendleton...while being 'Salad Man' on mess duty, I came down with Rubella (measles, which probably infected half the base, since I was hands-on with food prep). I got shoved into an isolation ward over Christmas, but the food was once again far superior.

I think every Marine who had a food service MOS was disgruntled, and it showed.

July 27,1967. My Dad dropped me off at the post office in Poughkeepsie for the beginning of my adventure.

I've only been back there twice in all the years.

I joined the Navy to see the world BUT they didn't tell me it would be a "working cruise" LOL

That reminds me of the parody that Saturday Night Live did of one of the Navy recruiting ads of the mid 70's where it shows a sailor swabbing the deck and the announcer is saying "port of call,Bayonne,New Jersey..."

Try eating "SOS" on a DD that
is pitching and rolling, day after day, in heavy weather.

Terms that I either hadn't heard before that date, or that, at the very least, gained new meaning:

I learned some neat little songs...like...

"I wanna be an Airborne Ranger,I wanna go to Vietnam,I wanna be an Airborne Ranger,I wanna kill some Charlie Cong"

"The outdoor Basic Training scenes for the movie "Stripes""

Ha! I think I joined the Army because of that movie.

Happy anniversary and thanks for your service. In '59 I joined the Army Reserve. When I stepped off the bus at the reception center at Ft. Ord, CA, I thought I was pretty grown up. Upon leaving Ord after 6 months of infantry training, I realized how wrong I had been.

"During ITR, one of the 'Troop Leaders' was a perenially hungover Corporal who's given name was General James...so we had to listen to Corporal General James giving us orders for a few weeks."

Hmmm. . . . if he cleaned up his act he could have left the service as Sergeant-Major General James -- the only sergeant major with two stars on his stripes.

I still recall my 1st. night at Lackland (aug 26 1967) laying in my bunk thinking "OMG what have I gone and done! This is nothing like the recruiter said it would be."

It was 0200 hrs on 23 Oct. '75. (I went delay entry just to make sure I was ready). I was asleep when we arrived at Ft. Knox. Before we got off the bus, this huge guy in a "smokie the bear" hat and a uniform with creases that could cut you, gets on the bus yelling, "[Explicative deleted] get off my [Explicative deleted] bus you maggots!" I said to myself right then and there (as probably every recruit has), self you have REALLY [Explicative deleted] up this time.

Among other names, the DI's called us "girls" from then till we graduated BCT.
