On Islam and its Jihadist ideology, I would recomment the following books.

"Islamic Imperialism: A History", by Efraim Karsh

"Politically Incorrect guide to Islam [and the Crusades]", by Robert Spencer

"Islam Unveiled", by Robert Spencer

"The Legacy of Jihad", By Andrew Bostom.

Basically, Islam since its inception was an imperialist religion bent on the world domination. Muhammad in his farewell address proclaimed: "I was ordered to fight all men till they say there is no God but Allah".

Similar statements were issued by Saladin, Khomeini, etc.
Islamic Jihad long predates communism although communists and Islamists found common causes fighting against Western Civilization.

However, whenever Islamists come to power in a particular country, Communists are often among the first to be hanged, like after the Islamic revolution in Iran.

True. But I think it is at least worth pausing to consider Lenin's treatise "Left Wing Communism, An Infantile Disorder". Lenin argues that hardcore Communists must disavow all moral rules, including Marxist ideology, and that Communists must sometimes carry out anti-Marxist actions in order further Communist revolution. All Marxists who refuse or resist anti-Marxist directives from party must be violently purged. I can't think of a better time to have done so than in Iran. There is no way the Commies would have risked an overtly Communist regime in Iran. It would have turned even Iranian radicals (not to mention the entire Muslim world) against them. Any Marxists who would have objected to or fought against Ayatollah Khomeini and his merry band of Mullahs from taking over would have been rigorously suppressed with the Soviet Union's blessing IMO. The point was to create a pan-Arab confederation that could later be merged with Communism. Iran would have only been considered part of this project. They weren't going to risk their entire strategy by turning Iran into an overtly Communist country (IMO)--GGG
