Youngest Jewish Federation victim testifies”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Layla Bush was sprawled on the floor, bleeding and trying to count the gunshots she heard down the hallway to figure out how many rounds the gunman had left.
By the time she’d counted to about five, she realized she couldn’t move anyway. She wouldn’t be able to call 911, she told jurors Wednesday, and worse — the gunman had returned.
“He came back around, and at that point I saw him with both hands on the gun — taking more time to aim, it looked like to me,” she testified in King County Superior Court. “I believe he was trying to shoot to kill me.”
Bush took the witness stand Wednesday against Naveed Haq, a 32-year-old man accused of ranting about Jewish people and U.S. foreign policy as he walked the halls of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and opened fire.
One woman was killed in the July 28, 2006, rampage in Belltown. Bush, now 24, was shot in the abdomen and again in the shoulder as she lay partially propped up against a bookcase, she told jurors. Four others were seriously wounded.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Rexroad testified that she was finishing up her work just after 4 p.m. when she heard “popping” noises. Rexroad went down the hallway and saw Haq, who had forced his way into the locked building about two minutes earlier.
“He turned and looked at me. He had a gun in his hand. He shot me,” she said, her voice quivering. “I remember feeling stinging, and then feeling nothing.”
She slipped into a nearby conference room and tried to close the door behind her, she testified. “He was trying to get in. He shot me again — it went across the back of my knee and knocked me down.”
Somehow, she stumbled into another hallway, down the back steps and through an exit. All along, she was yelling for someone to help her. But other co-workers had either already fled the building or had also been shot.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Still, Klein reached up and pulled down the telephone receiver from her desk and dialed 911. As she spoke with an operator, Haq appeared again in her doorway and told her “because you were too [expletive] stupid to listen, you are my hostage now.”
With Haq’s gun trained on her head, Klein offered him the receiver and then crouched quietly in a corner, she testified.
“He began to state that ... he would like to talk to [television talk-show host] Larry King and the Jews ... need to get out of Lebanon and Iraq. This is his Hezbollah, this is his personal statement.””

“Jewish Federation shooting victim breaks down during testimony
‘He had the gun at my head the entire time’”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Haq, who was raised in a Muslim American family, gave the operator his name and Social Security number. He said he shot Klein. Asked if she needed an ambulance, Haq replied, “Yeah, I don’t care.”
He answered the operator’s questions, confirming that he was acting alone and hadn’t been drinking.
“I don’t care if I die — I just want to say that,” he said. “This is just to make a point.””
