Democrats call for 'new realism' abroad
WASHINGTON, July 29 (UPI) -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, establishing the Democratic Party's platform for the upcoming election, called for a "new realism" in U.S. foreign policy.
Richardson delivered the party's Saturday radio address, and knocked the Bush administration for failing to understand "that while diplomacy without power is weak, power without diplomacy is blind."
The New Mexico governor went through a litany of international problem spots -- from Iraq to North Korea and the Middle East in general.
He went over the Democratic plan for "a new realism in our foreign policy." The main points are energy independence; rebuilding alliances; focusing on the "real dangers," which involves a redeployment of U.S. troops in Iraq; dealing directly with Iran and North Korea; passing a comprehensive immigration plan; facing "global environmental threats" and respecting "human rights and American values."
"Every American wants safety and security," Richardson said. "We can continue to wait for Republicans in Washington to lead or we can make a change.

Too bad the Republicans took down that great ad with the white flag waving, where they showed clips of the Dems making clearly defeatist, anti-US ststements.
It would be very appropriate here.
If Clinton with all his "great diplomacy" had solved these problems, we wouldn't be facing them now.
And look how Clinton's hugging Arafat and Madelaine kissy-pooing Kim Jong Il of N. Korea turned out.
Let's see, "Politics of Meaning" didn't work...how about "Culture of Corruption"? Hmm, kinda tight on a bumpersticker. How about "Anti-War"? Nah, too old school. "Bush Lied!" Yes, but we've used that for six years now. "Down With USA!" "USA Out of Iraq!" "What'd They Ever Do to US?" I dunno, none of those send me..."NEW REALISM!" YESSSSS! High-Fives all around!
Just what I was thinking.
while diplomacy without power is death, power without diplomacy is survival."
There, fixed it for him, diplomacy is war by other means.
New week, new "plan" for the Dims. *Rolleyes*
These weekly new visions and plans from the Rats sure are confusing. As John Q. Voter, I still don't know where they stand. As a Freeper, I do. And it scares the hell out of me...
Here is a longer version with more detail, I couldn't find the actual transcript.

"We are Democrats and we stand for diplomacy, not threats; bridges, not walls; alliances, not isolation," he said.
On the domestic front, Richardson said, "We need a man-on-the-moon effort to reduce our dependency on foreign oil _ go from 65 percent to 20 percent by 2015."

But they oppose drilling at ANWR or off the coast of US, which would indeed reduce our dependence on foreigh oil.
Dems have slogans, but no solutions or any ideas how to implement their slogans.
"New realism"? Does that mean that they understand why Israel is worried to see a guy who's openly and *proudly* calling for Israel to be wiped off the map developing nukes?
Crap. "Energy independence"? Democraps fight every proposal
to increase our domestic energy supply (oil, nuclear).
"American values"? Let more illegals in, more "tolerance,
diversity, multiculturalism", etc.
"He went over the Democratic plan for "a new realism in our foreign policy." The main points are energy independence; rebuilding alliances; focusing on the "real dangers," which involves a redeployment of U.S. troops in Iraq; dealing directly with Iran and North Korea..."
You cannot negotiate diplomatically with those bent on your total annihilation. At that point, diplomacy is used as a chess piece to mark time and create several positions.
A diplomatic solution implies that your opposition is also willing to engage in diplomacy and negotiations.
What we face is not a group willing to engage in the process of give-and-take.
They want death. For the democrats, especially Richardson, who has his eyes on the Presidency in 2008 to present this bilge is a frightening prospect for an America comprised of burning cinders and a refuge population.
We are in a box diplomatically and besieged. There is no other option but to fight. It is going to get worse, and untenable if a democrat wins. Russia and China are happily backing all the chaos as a prelude.
Is the new realism that the USA does not set the tone for world foreign policy? That we have to accept the ascendancy of the nations like North Korea and Iran? Is this the modern version of Carter's malaise?
Just A Nobody calls fro DemonRATS to get real.
I thought the following was the new big plan/slogan:
Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans.
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi
That's off her online site, and I saw her on TV with the banners behind her with the "New Direction for America"...reminds me of 'take America back'. Too many plans and slogans to keep up with. Such morons.
"Richardson delivered the party's Saturday radio address, and knocked the Bush administration for failing to understand "that while diplomacy without power is weak, power without diplomacy is blind.""
Richardson makes a great point. International diplomacy is vitally important to the survival of our nation and it should only be entrusted to the very best people we have to offer.
I'll always regret that Monica Lewinsky turned down the job at the United Nations Richardson offered her in exchange for her perjury re her affair with Clinton.
