Mel Gibson apologizes for DUI arrest

LOS ANGELES - Mel Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for his drunk driving arrest and saying he has battled alcoholism throughout his life.

Gibson also apologized for what he said were "despicable" statements he made to the deputies who arrested him early Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested," he said in a statement issued by his publicist. "I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Publicist Alan Nierob declined to elaborate beyond the statement.

Gibson, 50, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.

A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, Whitmore said. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.

The actor was released early Friday after posting $5,000 bail.

So obviously that verse does not mean what you think, when you DO think it through.

Ok, I see you are correct where the medical science has deemed achoholism a disease, but it was admitted that this decision had "problems". I will admit that alcoholism can be considered an illness that is psychological in nature and is caused by environmental factors such as one's experiences in life. However,I don't subscribe to the belief that it is genetic, or physiological in nature. No one ever broke out in a drunk, or involuntarily started doing 12 ounce curls. The hereditary aspect is the influence one's parents may have had on a person, or the traumatic experiences they have faced in the past that would cause them to drink excessively.

There is growing evidence that certain brain structures -- specifically dopamine receptors -- contribute to a person being susceptible to alcoholism.

Ok, then possibly there is a physiological origin.

Well then don't.

I, however, subscribe to the results of well documented medical research.

Alcoholic or not, disease or not, Mel Gibson has some serious amends to make over his comments, and it sounds as if he is making the first steps in that direction. Hope he makes all 12, I kind of like the guy myself.

Only .12 and he was that out of control?

That's exactly what I was thinking. .12 is nothing. Either the cops lowered it or he can't hold his booze.

I think that ""Judge not lest ye be judged." Matt.7:1 verse pertains to the soul.

"I'm surprised by the hypocrisy of Freepers who condemn the left's anti-semitism but support Mel, because he made a movie they liked."

Precisely. I don't care if he made "Bambi," his words were atrocious.

As for today, I'm not in the least bit impressed by the pretty words his publicist wrote for him to say. His handlers managed to clean him up and remind him to look contrite but I'm not buying it. Something's ringing hollow inside me and I think I know why.

For the record I've been continuously sober for more than 3 decades. Only reason I mention that is I don't want my post to be misconstrued as having been written by a garden variety alcoholism basher. You'll forgive me if I say I don't care much for that crowd. Why should I?

You were, or are, a conditioned drinker. Or those particular cops were incredibly incompetent.

"The man's an anti-semite. I have as little respect for him as I do for any of the other anti-semites who are mentioned around here, from Koffi Annan to Pat Buchanan."

How is an being an anti-Semite any different from being anti-Catholic, anti-Mormon, or anti-Muslim? Hatred is hatred. Goodness knows, there can't so much as an article come up on FR about Mitt Romney and it becomes open season on Mormons. The difference is that we don't have the ADL or B'nai B'rith organizations to villanize those who defame Mormons. And it's open game on FR to attack Muslims for their religion.

I don't justify Mel Gibson's tirade, I just don't see why speaking evil of Jews is any worse than speaking evil of other faiths. It's one thing to debate doctrines, it's another to demonize individuals who believe those tenets. America has a long legacy of religious intolerance. It's the last form of bigotry we've really left untouched.

Now that you've gotten that out of your system, when exactly did I say anti-semitism was any different from being anti-anything else?

You seem to have a bone to pick with someone, but I'm quite sure what I wrote that made you unload all this on me.

Or is this an example of that variety of PC which says that if I say one thing, I then have to say a dozen other things to placate anyone who might be looking for a fight--say, if I say "Being anti-German is wrong" I then have to rattle off every other ethnic group and say being anti-everything else is wrong?

It's an odd defensiveness I find among all groups, their need to have their particular hurt soothed at all times.

We're not talking about those other things. I'm saying anti-semitism is something I don't respect. If we want to talk about other varieties of bigotry, I may post to those threads if I feel so moved. But don't unload on me because someone insulted you--it wasn't me.

I love how easily offended American Jews -and there allies -are. Here we have Jews in Israel acting like Men, putting there lives on the line while in the USA they cry like little metrosexuals because Mel said a few words.

We're all supposed to walk on egg shells and never say anything that *might* offend their delicate little ears.

Of course, the rest of us can be insulted without impunity.

Poor little babies. I hope they can all sleep tonight, knowing that Mel in a drunken state, might have said some unkind words.
