Knocking the French: Why?
NavySEALs.com ^ | July 30, 2006 | W. Thomas Smith Jr.

But we Americans seem to have short memories.

What else could explain the fact that we, generally speaking, so-often lambaste the French, calling them “cowards” for not allying themselves fully with us in every instance? We constantly throw in their faces the fact that we came to their rescue in World Wars I and II. And we’ve all heard the jokes: “Surplus French military rifles for sale. Never fired. Dropped once.”

They were not helping the USA they were sticking their finger in Britain's eye. Different thing entirely.

Why? Because the French are the only nation on Earth to actually embed their entire Military History into their own name: F"ran"ce.

We should not forget Alexis De Tocqueville who wrote "Democracy in America" in 1831. Here was a French aristocrat who expressed admiration for our truly free society, where people took the initiative to band together and govern themselves. In comparison, 30 years later the Brits were still trying to break us up by supporting the Confederacy.

" the USA would not exist today if France hadn't helped us in the Revolutionary War."

And we wouldn't exist if Napoleon had defeated the British...

People forget the first country the United States went to war with was...

France!

Nice article.

My dad was a combat infantryman during WWII, saw alot of battles, from the first wave at Normandy to the Bulge in the Ardennes. At one time his unit fought alongside the French Deuxieme division. He rated them as excellent soldiers.

I spent some time in France some years ago and thought well of the French for the most part. Yes, they can be arrogant, but they can be very real and worthwhile as well.

Knocking the French: Why? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Because French politicians micromanage their military. Most French politicians are closet Vichy in the face of an enemy.

Of course after a hundred of this political approach, French soldiers do not trust their government, making them unreliable.

That is why Rummy said going to war with the French as allies is like going deer hunting with an accordian player. Sad but true.

That is why we make fun of them. And they deserve it.

Because they are obnoxious, and they smell real bad. I also have a French last name, but I was born in Georgia.

Personally my experiences in France were good, and I respect and warmly regard their Special Forces soldiers.

If any Frenchmen get on this thread, can you help me identify what Army unit is stationed outside Lyon?

I spent a night with that unit and the next day in their bar they were showing me paintings of their unit in America during the Revolution, but I can't look up their history without knowing who they are (I don't remember).

You said, in part: Because they are arrogant and have nothing to be arrogant about!
***

Most of the French (that I met over a year back in 1980-81) re like most everyone else. Several told me, in separate instances, about their national bird, the rooster. It is the only bird, they said, that crows, while it is standing in sh*t.

Things may have changed, but the rank and file people I met were great to be with-- IF you speak decent French.

The French aren't cowards, they're just obnoxious. And it isn't limited to France; every Francophone culture seems to have the same attitude of superiority and disdain for everyone else. The "we rescued you in two world wars" is just our way of giving it back to them in the most irritating way available.

Learned in 7th grade that the ONLY reason the French helped the colonalists is because of their HATRED of England!

I mujst submit that there are several reasons why we knock the French:

1. DeGaulle is one big reason. He ran from France and the Germans in 1940, yet insisted that HE lead the folks who liberated France into Paris in WWII. His is a big ego which alienated many Americans, especially GI's.

2. DeGaulle got in a snit with the US in the 1960's and to spite us actually threatened to remove the interred GI Americans in France and return them to the US. Pathetic.

3. Most French, men and women, do not bathe or shower much. Who could like such people?

4. They are arrogant, self-serving, ignorant of anything non-French isolationists. They are not to be trusted in a fight. Who needs such people?

5. Degaulle got the Canadiens started when he visited the Worlds Fair in Montreal in 1968. He stirred up the French there, told them they were French, and should act like it. Ever since, the French Canadiens have been agitating and annoying everyone in Canada (which is really what French people do all over the world).

And finally, the French mostly love cats and hate dogs. Who ever could go for that?

the French accusing Floyd Landis of having too much testosterone in his body???

Because they were using L. Armstrong as the benchmark. You know, the American with one testicle that won the Tour SEVEN TIMES. The French now will have a rule that Americans can have zero testosterone, or they must be "doping".

"400 years ago the French Monarchy and Aristocracy were our allies. Subsequent to their being killed or driven out during the French Revolution, the remaining French do not seem to have been worth much"

400 years ago was 1606. The English hadn't even established the colony at Jamestown yet. The United States of America didn't exist until about 170 years later.

Patton had a great understanding of human nature..he knew the French as well.

Because of the French, the Colonists won at Yorktown, and the British surrendered.

Keep in mind, that we went to war with the french, before the revolutionary war.

France has absolutly no consideration for us, they were at war with the brits, and took any oppurtunity they could to get at them, our revolutionary war, was just another oppurtunity.

FWIW, have you ever noticed the history of colonies that became independent from both the brits and the french, France has a nasty history of brutal bahavior.
