They say some things never change and outside Dublin much of the old charm of Ireland was alive and well.
But, it was a different life and well-ness. New cars and new housing and vastly improved infrastructure are visible everywhere. And the Irish take delight in the fact that thousands of Britons were now crossing the Irish Sea to seek employment in Ireland, reversing the flow of humanity of the previous hundred years. And it’s not just Brits who are flocking to the Old Sod. By the time of my most recent visit in 2006, Iranians, Nigerians, Iraqis, Cambodians, VietNamese, Chinese, people of virtually every nationality were re-locating to Ireland seeking jobs and a better life–and citizenship.

There goes the neighborhood. The historical charm of Ireland; rustic, family-oriented, Catholic is gone forever. Now it'll have all the filth and problems of Britain and the rest of the first world as all the third-worlders continue to flow in. Hold your nose...there she goes....

Maybe, only to preserve their own power, not in the interest of preserving Irish culture, so to speak. The modern IRA (provisional) is nothing like the original IRA of the early 20th century; they're basically Marxist in their beliefs and practices and cooperated with several European terrorist groups in the 80's and 80's (non-muslim as far as I know). Their PR has been excellent over the past 35 years, especially in the U.S. where they've raised a lot of cash from Irish-Americans who are confusing the new with the old. The new however, are not a good bunch of lads at all.

We were in Ireland last year and loved it. I'm sure things have changed, but we enjoyed it, especially the rugged and isolated west coast.
I took my first trip overseas this past May, spending the bulk of my time on a bus tour of the UK. We stayed mostly in large city hotels, which of course cater to the bus tour crowd. At many of the hotels we stayed at, the staff were from other countries and could not speak English very well. At one Scottish hotel, there were at least 4 other bus tours (one from Russia), and all the waitresses/waiters in the restaurant were Czech and couldn't understand a thing we said. Even the ferries we took between Ireland and England were manned by Poles. Our tour director, a native Irishman told us that all the Irish staff had been let go, and the new staff on the ferry system consisted of Polish people. Even on the Isle of Skye, which is totally beautiful, the hotel we stayed at had nothing but foreigners who could speak little or no English at all. If I ever had the opportunity to go back again, I would definitely rent a car and visit the smaller towns/villages of these countries, staying in locally owned B&B's. It was my first bus tour, but I don't think I'd ever take another one.
Ireland remains a great place.

That's not going to happen. Ireland is now very similar in outlook to America, with all the good and bad that that brings. Anyway, what Irish person would want a return to tax rates of almost 60% after the way we turned the country around?
And 150,000 euro a year to live comfortably in Dublin! You couldn't pay me anything to live in Dublin again! I lived there for more than a decade, and its a bloody mess now, between the exhorbitant house prices and, even worse, the appalling transport infrastructure. If you're a young person trying to get onto the housing ladder, you won't be able to buy anything within twenty miles of the city centre, unless you're earning very serious wages. Which means you're probably stuck with a twenty to forty miles commute along roads packed with traffic, moving about ten miles per hour, and with no decent public transport alternatives. That's no life I'm afraid!
Some time ago a girl that was raped and fell pregnant, wanted to go to the UK to have an abortion, but she wasn't allowed by the government/court/church amalgamation, because abortion stands on the same level as murder (let's not argue about that, now). Only after she threatened to commit suicide, she was secretly allowed to go ahead with the abortion.
When Irish/American golfers pass into eternity (God willing), they wake-up on a links course in the west of Ireland with the wind at their back and the most beautiful rainbows ever painted by "Himself" overhead........fenway will return to the Eire next year to sharpen his game.
