I fear this deal is now dead with basically Rice not being wanted in Beirut unless she was willing to call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Obviously with this there is no point in her going to Beirut.

It's really hard to say what kinds of "deals" can be made, as the situation is dynamic, ever-changing.

I believe the diplomats are saying what they think they need to be saying.

And it makes it all the harder to successfully wage war when the media are micro-managing it. The Cana incident is just an opening for Lebanon to harden their position.
