In Midst of Scorching Heat Wave, CBS Proclaims Global Warming Debate Over
Business & Media Institute ^ | August 1, 2006 | Ken Shepherd

As sure as the sun rises in the east, when a heat wave engulfs the continental United States, it dawns on the media that “global warming” may be to blame. Such was the case with CBS’s Bob Orr on the July 31 “Evening News,” when the reporter consulted with Pew Center on Global Climate Change’s Jay Gulledge.

“The average global temperature is getting hotter due to global warming,” Gulledge told Orr.

“Gulledge says there’s no longer any serious debate” on climate change, Orr added. A short time later, Orr’s story was cut short just as Gulledge was explaining his theory that pollution in the 1960s and 1970s prevented global warming from occurring then.

“Just to underline how hot it is, the remote truck that Bob Orr was broadcasting from just overheated and we had to shut it down,” anchor Bob Schieffer explained as the story ended abruptly.

But is the van-unfriendly heat wave really damning proof of the impact of global warming? Not all climatologists agree, among them the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s John Christy.

In written testimony to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on May 2, 2001, Christy urged the committee “to be suspicious of media reports in which weather extremes are given as proof of human-induced climate change.”

He added that “weather extremes occur somewhere all the time,” including “the coldest combined November and December in 106 years” at the end of 2000, an event that “does not prove U.S. or global cooling.”

Sorry, but mild weather isn't news. Never is no matter whether it's hot or cold elsewhere. Mild weather is boring, global warming or no global warming.

BTW, during the heat wave before this one, parts of Oregon and Washington were the ONLY places in the continental U.S. where it was mild. Everywhere else it was scorching.

"Let's see. It's the middle of summer, 91 degrees in Austin at high noon. Nothing we're not used to in Central Texas for the 1st of August. Actually, it should be in the mid to high 90s by now."

Appears to me you're headed for a normal or a little above normal there. 94 as I write this with a forecast of 98. 96 is your normal high this time of year. Not exactly a deep freeze is it?

Where I live in Virginia is going to be 10-12 degrees above the normal high. Which I hate. There are reasons I don't live in the deep south and the heat is a major one.

Normally, we have had several days of triple digit temps here by August 1. This year, we have been slightly cooler. The past two days hit 100, but we stayed in the mid - high 90s for most of the summer.

I remember days on the farm in the late 50s & early 60s where we had temps well into the 100 - 105 range. Almost every stock tank dried up and crops died in the fields. We sold all livestock because our stock tanks were dry.

I'm still confused by Gore's one-way valve theory of greenhouse gases: The let light (heat) in, but they don't let it out?

Also, I have recently read that solar collectors trap the sun's energy that should have been reflected back.

"there’s no longer any serious debate” on climate change"

Just like the socialists. No talking. No debate. There were five thousand scientist signitors of the Kyoto petition.

No debate on the fact that 4,900 of the Phd.s were social scientists. (not a science at all)

Sociology, as in socialist science, a discipline created by socialists to promote socialism in academia and provide cannon fodder employees for the welfare state.

Thanks for some sanity,

NASA reported the polar ice caps were shrinking due to global warming.

ON MARS!!!

As Clintonians would say, "IT'S THE SUN, STUPID".

The sun is going through a cycle of increased heating. We are also exiting a many thousand year period of ice age.

Yes, humans contribute to global warming. The degree miniscule compared to nature. Mt Pinatubo/ Mt Saint Helens, eclipsed humans.
My $.02 worth,
Rohn
