Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

I'm looking for a name... it looks like we thought he was killed in airstrikes earlier this year (perhaps this is another son in law):

Zawahri tape taunts Bush and Blair
January 31, 2006

In his first appearance since being targeted by a US air strike in Pakistan, he said the wives of servicemen killed or injured in the Iraq war should blame the president and the prime minister.

...

There are conflicting reports over the possible identities of the four al-Qaida members believed to have been killed in the Pakistan air strike.

Intelligence officials said they could have included Zawahri's son-in-law and an Egyptian bomb-maker on the US most wanted list.

This is who was claimed killed in the January strike:
Abd al-Rahman al-Maghrebi

---

It was in the early hours of Jan. 13, following a dinner celebrating the holiday of Eid al-Adha, that Hellfire missiles rained down on a hut in Damadola, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas near the border with Afghanistan. Though al-Zawahiri apparently was not present at the time of the attack, the Pakistani government later revealed that four senior al Qaeda members -- identified as Abdul al-Maghribi, Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar, Khalid Habib and Abu Obaidah al-Masri -- were killed, along with several villagers.

The identities of these four men, and the role they apparently played within al Qaeda, is key:

Thanks nw.
I appreciate the feedback and memory joggers.
Rehman is a guy we really, really wanted.

I don't know if he is related to Al Zawahiri, though.

I think you can use a microwave oven. Unfortunately I learned this about a month after we threw out an old one. (sigh)

If you were able to use a dryer, I think it would also have to be unplugged.

Hizbullah Threatens To Kidnap IDF Soldiers

Hizbullah's southern Lebanon terrorist leader has threatened to order the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers in retaliation for the IDF's capture of Hizbullah terrorists early Saturday. At least two terrorists were arrested and three others killed in the raid on Hizbullah, which had received arms from Syria in violation of the United Nations Security Council ceasefire.

Navil Quavik also reiterated the terrorist organazation's refusal to disarm as required by the resolution. He added that Hizbullah has the right to attack the IDF so long as it remains in Lebanon. Israel has said its troops will remain until an international force arrives.

Laura was on CNNi during the 5pm EST segment. She gave props to Jill on the plural mentioning of Rakan. They might reair some portions of the interview later since CNNi on the weekend is like CNN headline news (they recycle segments more on the weekend than other news networks). Not as many US viewers of CNNi since many systems do not carry it, but it has a worldwide audience larger than any US cable network (including Fox).

It's a wonderful life for a jihadi web master...
See

A grand existence among Muslims on-line

the heart-warming tale of Sasjamal and friends at the clearguidance.com forum, and the terrorists they helped spawn.

The point I tried to make with the guys from the Globe and Mail when they interviewed me for the story was this:

The idea that the users of Clearguidance were somehow goaded into making violent comments is laughable to anyone who were there at the time.

The hot-headed kids on the clearguidance forum were only following the example set for them by guys like SasJamal and Salmaan Ziauddin (who posted under the name IbnMardhiyah). To say that SasJamal's attempt to disclaim responsibility for what his site spawned is disingenuous would be an understatement.

This is precious:

"They got themselves into that," he says of Mr. Ahmad and the other Toronto terror suspects.
"I had nothing to do with it."

Note to jihadi forum admins everywhere:
Not only can you be held responsible for what you do, you *will be* held responsible. When people like the British Home Secretary say "...we need to make the Internet a hostile environment for terrorists..." guys like SasJamal need to be very concerned. They are the facilitators and enablers of the global jihad, and fortunately for us, tracking them down is fairly simple.

Here's a taste of what the admins and so-called moderators of the clearguidance forum were about:

http://internet-haganah.com/harchives/001512.html
http://internet-haganah.com/harchives/001291.html
http://internet-haganah.com/harchives/001432.html

It's a very small world. Members of the Toronto 17 were not only active on Clearguidance, but also the English-language forum run by the at-Tibyan group, and the Arabic-language al-Ekhlaas forum.

Irhabi007 was active in helping to operate the latter two fora. The Toronto 17 were working with the two guys arrested recently in Georgia. The guys in Georgia travelled to Washington DC where they shot surveillance video of targets for future terrorist attacks.

They sent their video to Irhabi007. Why? Because gathering intelligence in support of future attacks was one of things that he did for the jihad - hence the name '007'.

Virtual Incompetence
What you get when do-it-yourself terrorists train online, by Emily Hunt

The point here is that it is NOT explosives instruction that is the most important aspect of jihadist use of the Internet. What the Internet provides the global jihad is community. In many ways the global jihad only exists online and to the extent that communities of jihadis are allowed to propagate in cyberspace. Break up those online communities and what you will be left with are geographically isolated clusters of jihadists who can be more easily tracked down and taken out.

Mutiny on Flight 613

Passengers refuse to allow holiday jet to take off until two Asian men are thrown off plane

By CHRISTOPHER LEAKE and ANDREW CHAPMAN

23:42pm 19th August 2006

The extraordinary scenes happened after some of the 150 passengers on a Malaga-Manchester flight overheard two men of Asian appearance apparently talking Arabic.

Passengers told cabin crew they feared for their safety and demanded police action. Some stormed off the Monarch Airlines Airbus A320 minutes before it was due to leave the Costa del Sol at 3am. Others waiting for Flight ZB 613 in the departure lounge refused to board it....
