Mel Gibson: Has He Gone Too Far? [Holocaust a 'Numbers Game']
Reader's Digest ^ | August 2, 2006

Posted on 08/02/2006 4:43:25 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

When we interviewed Mel Gibson over two years ago for his controversial movie, The Passion of the Christ, we expected to make news. But we didn't know then that what Gibson had to say to us would be just as relevant today. Our interviewer, Peggy Noonan, asked Gibson about his father's rumored doubts about the scope of the Holocaust. Here's how Gibson responded:

MEL GIBSON: My dad taught me my faith, and I believe what he taught me. The man never lied to me in his life. He was born in 1918. He lost his mother at two years of age. He lost his father at 15. He went through the Depression. He signed up for World War II, went off to Guadalcanal, got malaria and shot at, and didn't like it too much. [He] served his country fighting the forces of fascism, came back, worked very hard physically, raised a family, put a roof over my head, clothed me, fed me, taught me my faith, loved me, I love him back. And he did all that so some guy has the right to misrepresent him and say nasty things and paint him in a very bad light. And then other people said, 'Well, he's just an old kook.' He's not an old kook. He's very intelligent. He's in complete possession of all his mental faculties. And if he says something he has a reason why he says it and he can back it up. Mensa wanted this guy, okay? He's very intelligent. So I'll slug it out with anyone until my heart is black and blue if they say anything against him or ever try and hurt him in that way. Now, that said, you know, I pray for the guy who maligned him in that way and hope that he will one day apologize.

NOONAN: You're going to have to go on the record. The Holocaust happened, right?

MEL GIBSON: I have friends and parents of friends who have numbers on their arms. The guy who taught me Spanish was a Holocaust survivor. He worked in a concentration camp in France. Yes, of course. And my dad also knows that there were internment camps where many people died. Now, his whole thing was about the numbers. I mean atrocities happened. The thing with him [my father] was that he was talking about numbers. I mean when the war was over they said it was 12 million. Then it was six. Now it's four. I mean it's that kind of numbers game. I mean war is horrible. The Second World War killed tens of millions of people. Some of them were Jews in concentration camps. Many people lost their lives. In the Ukraine, several million people starved to death between 1932 and 1933. During the last century 20 million people died in the Soviet Union. Okay? It's horrible.

Drunk people are delirious. They confabulate and perseverate and make up stories to go with their distorted perceptions of reality.

And the perception of reality that is most distorted is that little filter in our head that is always trying to separate what we ~might~ say from what we ~should~ say.

I've got friends that rant when they are drunk. The stuff they spew isn't out of thin air, it's just a louder more belligerent version of what they think sober and don't usually say.

Underneath the pretty face sometimes lurks some ugly stuff... and sometimes it slips out. No one of these instances alone would nail him to the wall, but I'm curious to see how many more subtle little stories people will come forward with.... I think more than a couple and you've got yourself a pattern.

Soft racism of patronizing low expectations it may be, but it is racism every bit as vile as anything Gibson uttered.

You've lost your friggin' mind.

You need one of these:

And, can you imagine how many times we'd hear "Honor thy mother and father," if he had "repudiated" his father? Not to mention the breach in the relationship with his elderly father.

He would have been cheered for repudiating a racist father.

Sorry folks but what crime has Mel committed? However, last Friday we had a Muslim go into a synagogue and open fire. Now which is more serious?

Of course, Mel Gibson is not a terrorist. But the rotten anti-Semitism reflected in his remarks is at the heart of what our country is at war against. People need to understand that, and understand how horribly dangerous it is.

Tsk, tsk. Another of those drive-by insults that you so dislike receiving, but give out so freely.
Agreed--the "racism" of low expectations doesn't even come close to the evil of anti-semitism.

Goodness me. What would I do without FReepers who keep up with facts. That whole door bell thing. One time I answered it and there was durn Jehovah Witness. I took the doorbell out right after that. Bill and Hill should have done the same thing. What if an F'N Jew rang? Oh wait... they simply absconded with the silverware and vacated after they cleaned all the rugs.

That means we're back to Square One. 911, Hezbollah and everything in between, and since, is Mel Gibson's fault because he got off the wagon. Granted if I was his wife he would not have had a happy bail hearing, but this is a huge stretch in light of our previous run in with "F'N Jew bastard". (Hitlery Klinton quote) Raise your /sarcasm and see you one. :-)

I think this is ultimately going to be the test for Mel Gibson. Is he willing to talk openly and honestly about what his father taught him and believes and denounce it if it's anti-Semetic and/or simply wrong or will he keep sticking up for his father? I understand his love for his father and his desire to honor his father, but there are limits and Mel is going to be forced to face those limits or go down with his father.

I wonder why the complete RD interview is not available. I was not even able to find a transcript of the Diane Sawyer interview. But did find this excerpt from it on a local (San Diego) NBC newsite.

Mel Gibson did tell Sawyer, however, his viewpoints about the Holocaust.

"Do I believe that there were concentration camps where defenseless and innocent Jews died cruelly under the Nazi regime? Of course I do, absolutely," Mel Gibson told Sawyer. "It was an atrocity of monumental proportions."

"And you believe there were millions -- 6 million?" Sawyer asked, to which Mel Gibson responded, "Sure."

It seems rather clear that Gibson does think 6 million died.

Yes, and who cares what Mel thinks? It is just the left (and many are American Jews) trying to come down on Mel because he is a conservative and more successful than many in Hollywierd. That has been the problem all along. The left and their accomplices in the MSM, could care less how many Jews died in WW2.

Sure, a bigot is a bigot. But the bigotry of low expectations doesn't kill. Anti-semitism can and does and is. It is, therefore, far grievous.

considering how the leftwang of Hollywood love Palestine I am certain that Mel Gibson' anti semitic remarks would have gotten a pass if he was liberal in all his doings.

I did find out an interesting tidbit. Michael Moore's Farenhype 911 was originally going to be financed by Mel Gibson's Icon productions. So I don't think I would say Gibson is fully conservative. But his pro life views and his defense of his Catholic faith do not play well in Hollywood.

I'll worry about Mel Gibson when Roman Polanski returns to the USA in handcuffs. Otherwise, I don't give a damn.

What that SOB did, that's something to get worked up about.

Interesting that your handle is "question assumptions", yet you , and most everyone, assumes that Gibson was taught anti-Semetism from his father.

The argument is between the Polish estimate of a little over 4 million the Jewish estimate of 6 million.

At least we are not leaving it up to the Iranian dictator to decide.

So I don't think I would say Gibson is fully conservative.

Maybe not fully but quite a bit. Pure conservatives don't last in Hollywierd. Gibson got around alot of that by starting his own companies, not depending on the employment from the ultra-left studio owners, etc.

and he is also pointing out another truth. Many people died in WW2. Millions of others were killed in camps, by starvation and through warfare. That sometimes gets lost...

I have friends of the family in prison camps in Europe and they remember the stories. Polish, Italians, French...

the Jews suffered, but so did others.
