My first car was a 69 Mercury. Ran like a top, easy to work on, powerful as hell.

My second and third cars were Chevys. The first was a hand-me-down stationwagon with constant cooling issues on top of two broken timing chains. The second was an 86 Caprice which, aside from being courted by the thugs in my neighborhood, had cooling system issues. Otherwise, it was a decent vehicle.

I own an 05 Montego now, and I love it. The engine compartment is easy to work in, general maintenance is easy, and the safety features (thanks to Ford's marriage with Volvo) made it a good purchase decision.

Moral of the story is not to believe everything you read. I hear people talk about Found On Road Dead, etc., yet they're spending $1500 for some stupid fix on their VWs or $150 for an oil change on their BMWs. I'll stay domestic, thanks, regardless of who's making the components or assembling the vehicle.
