I always liked Koch ... when he was Mayor he was always so upbeat and positive about the city, ya could always tell that he absolutely loved NYC and being Mayor of it ... but unfortunately during his reign he presided over a city that was percieved to be in decline, with crime rampant, corruption all over the place, ect ect ... but he did very little to stem this decline.

Rudy, on the other hand, came in and went right to work ... cleaning up much of the corruption and crime, getting the municipal unions back into line, restoring Times Square as a prime tourist destination, and generally making NYC 'inhabitable' again. Rudy's reforms are still being felt to this day and stand as a testament that no deteriorating environment is beyond salvation

Rudy got slammed by hard-core lefties on this front, but he got results and thats all that matter .... and remember this all occurred before 9/11

Koch was mayor when the city was in transition. for better or worse, he helped that transition along.

It is true that Mr. Koch while he was always a positive minded even though he struggled with a NYC that was an embaressment at the time that he was mayor, at least he prepared the soil for Rudy.

Both Koch and Guiliani were good mayors. Koch inherited a basket case at the start of his administration, much worse than when Guiliani took over. John Lindsay devastated the city financially, and Abe Beam did not help any. Koch had the guts to tell the city to take the cuts, but things would improve, and they did. David Dinkins undid a good portion, but not all of it. Now with Bloominidiot.......
