SAN DIEGO – A Chicago flight attendant and psychologist was sentenced Friday to more than three years in prison for his role in a plan to travel to Ensenada to molest boys.
David Mayer, 50, was one of seven men arrested in February after an undercover FBI sting operation infiltrated the North American Man/Boy Love Association.
U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Miller also ordered Mayer to be supervised, basically on probation, during the 12 years following his release, and to register as a sex offender, undergo psychiatric testing and treatment and to have no access to children.
He was sentenced to 37 months, but will get credit for the 17 months he has already spent in custody and should be released after 2½ years.
The judge said he expected Mayer would lose his psychologist's license, and his lawyer said the case would also cost Mayer his job as a flight attendant.
“I am mortified and ashamed by my actions,” Mayer told the judge. He said he can only claim “temporary insanity” for his decision to join the association known as NAMBLA.
He said that, like the character Hester Prynne in the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel “The Scarlet Letter,” “I, too, will be a pariah for the rest of my life. I will be treated like a leper.” Mayer was the last defendant to be sentenced in the case.
He and two other men were arrested in Feb. 2005 on Harbor Island in San Diego. FBI agents said the trio were on their way to Ensenada in hopes of molesting children there.
However, the travel agency through which they arranged the trip turned out to be part of an FBI sting in which an agent had infiltrated NAMBLA.
The other two, Phillip Todd Calvin, 44, and Paul Ernest Zipszer, 40, pleaded guilty last February, and have been sentenced to 24 months in prison.
Four other men were arrested in the Marina del Rey area of Los Angeles. Three have received similar 37- month sentences aside from one man with prior convictions, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors said the idea of traveling overseas to have sex with boys was Mayer's idea. Mayer told authorities he had previously traveled to other countries for such sex tours.
Crossing international borders with the intent of molesting children is a violation of U.S. law. Mayer pleaded guilty to a charge of conducting illegal interstate commerce for the purpose of illicit sex.

Hard to tell from the article. I googled him and got the article plus thousands of other like names; way too many to go through. My guess is that the airline's PR dept did some fast talking to the reporter about keeping that out of the story.
If only this was a unique case... but it isn't. It's just that this one was caught.
There must be so many homosexual pedophiles who aren't caught, and who are doing this as you read this.
