Democrat James Webb's Senate campaign accused Sen. George Allen (R) of making demeaning comments Friday to a 20-year-old Webb volunteer of Indian descent.
S.R. Sidarth, a senior at the University of Virginia, had been trailing Allen with a video camera to document his travels and speeches for the Webb campaign. During a campaign speech Friday in Breaks, Virginia, near the Kentucky border, Allen singled out Sidarth and called him a word that sounded like "Macaca."
"This fellow here over here with the yellow shirt, Macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great. We're going to places all over Virginia, and he's having it on film and its great to have you here and you show it to your opponent because he's never been there and probably will never come."
After telling the crowd that Webb was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen again referenced Sidarth, who was born and raised in Fairfax County.
"Lets give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia," said Allen, who then began talking about the "war on terror."
In an interview, Sidarth said he suspects Allen singled him out because he was the only non-white face in the audience, which he estimated included about 100 Republican supporters.
"I think he was doing it because he could and I was the person of color there and it was useful for him in inciting his audience," said Sidarth. "I was annoyed he would use my race in a political context."

The first thing that popped into my head: Curious George.
I believe he actually said "m' cocka" meaning "my poop". He was calling the guy a sh**head. (It's a southern thing.)
He's got my vote, whether he likes your kid or not.
You know what I've been thinking about this morning (and will blog on my own this evening)?
Here's a U.S. Senator who has
- been in public office for over 20 years
- is used to speaking in public
- knows the RATs would love to pin him as a racist
- is running for reelection
- is rumored to be considering a run for the White House
And yet we're supposed to believe that he turns to (in Siddarth's words), the only "person of color" in the crowd (gee, ya think in Buchanan County?) and issues what he "knows" to be a racial slur while he's STARING INTO THE BLASTED VIDEO CAMERA!!!
C'mon people. Use yer brains.
(Yes, it's SARCASM!)
The video tells all. I think the whole thing is ridiculous and blown out of proportion, but Allen better watch out from now on. He should be very careful with what he says until the election is over.
Why? It doesn't matter what he does or doesn't say. The accusations will still be there.
Yes but look how easily Republicans get into trouble when they say stupid things. i.e. Trent Lott, etc. They always end up being the bad ones NOT Democrats. Its very one sided in the Senate and the American people never stick up for Republicans for some wierd reason.
The story was above the fold in "The Washington Post" this morning!
Good one, kjo!

I first heard of James Webb back in 1979 when his first novel came out - FIELDS OF FIRE. I read it and it was pretty good. Over the years I read a couple other of his books and thought he was a straight shooter. When he was appointed SECNAV back in the 80's, I thought 'cool!' However, when he quit and took his ball home in a fit of spite, I began to have doubts about him. Now, to me, he is just another moonbat Dem.
And a garden variety moonbat at that!
Mr. Webb has no money and no clue.
Honest question - is it an offensive remark if the majority do not know what it means, including the guy using it? I do not know what the circumstances are but maybe Allen asked someone 'Hey, who is that guy?' And someone answers, 'he's a macaca' and Allen hears 'he's macaca.' I think the reason Allen gave - the haircut and mohawk reference and all - was lame. He just should have said, 'hey, someone told me his name is macaca. Hell, I didn't know it meant that!'
He got the CaCa part right! I'm surprised the little turd wasn't wearing a concealed body bomb and trying to kill Allen!
The guy is supposedly American - his parents are from India - he was born here. He has no reason to be offended.
No, the reason Allen gave, was likely exactly what happened. This guy has been following Allen around, likely not identifying himself to the event organizers/attendees and filming the Senator at every campaign stop.
So the people on the RV gave him a nickname. From what I understand he actually has a mullet, not a mohawk.
But Allen is in the middle of a speech, sees the guy once again zooming in on him and he good naturedly points him out. He can't come up with "Mohawk" so he makes something up.
More importanly it was Dick Wadhams who gave the "mohawk" defense. Allen said (and it's in the original WP article) that he meant no offense, he didn't know what the word meant and he apologized.
That SHOULD have been the end of it.
What will be interesting is to see if this guy is back on the trail this week.
aha! You are SO smart....
And what do you call him/her?
I don't think I would call TC a "hardcore" pub site.
Or maybe mo-fuka.
