U.S. House Speaker Says GOP Must Press Immigration Issue This Year
(AP) WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert voiced confidence today that the United States can block illegal immigrants from crossing the nation's borders even though he estimates there are up to 15 million living here already.
During a phone interview with "The Don and Roma Morning Show" on Chicago's WLS radio station, Hastert said the U.S. must seal its border.
Hastert said fences, pedestrian inhibitors and the Army Corps of Engineers and Border Patrol working together could accomplish the goal.
The Illinois Republican has been emphasizing the immigration issue in making the case to voters that they should keep Congress in GOP hands.
Hastert announced last month that the House would hold hearings on immigration across 12 states to help put together legislation that could pass both the House and Senate and be signed by President Bush.
Big talker on a radio show. Didn't see him doing much about it the past few years.
Is Hastert just trying to make up for that brainfart about congressional immunity or some such?
Oh, I'm sure we can close the borders along Mexico AND Canada...but our government hasn't shown the will to do so. The Senate doesn't have the desire. The administration would rather call Americans racists for suggesting it. It remains to be seen how serious the House is. On the one hand we have Hastert and other Republicans traveling the country to boost the House bill, on the other we have Pence selling out to the business lobby so they'll finance further advancements in his political career.
If I felt certain the House would stall amnesty until Bush was out of office, giving us an opportunity to elect a pro enforcement candidate in '08, I'd be far more desirous of keeping the House this fall. But pence has muddied the waters. If I'm working to get them elected just so in Dec.-Jan-Feb we can be sold out...
Pence is undermining the Republican majority and they need to do something to convince us we won't be sold out after elections.
Just pointing out how we, the "good guys", continue shooting ourselves in the foot by giving the illegals multiple means to bypass justice while adhering to the higher principles of morality while the aliens are only here to suck as much money as possible. Or spreading their true costs among taxpaying citizens who don't utilize their "services". Or having our children subjugated to diseases that aren't screened for. Must I go on?
Coercer: Being who you are is punishment enough. Don't threaten me without means. Tell us again why you aren't a person paid by a foreign government to subvert American opinion on a widely read political website.
Hopefully we'll never have the chance to see how badly you'd lose that bet. The moment some yahoo goes shooting at aliens the political support against regularization would disappear and we'd have us some ugly and deadly race riots which would scar the country for decades. Use your head.
It sounds like a good plan. Then we can put sharks in the canal to discourage any swimmers.
84 days from the election, the Pubbies are coming out of the wilderness. I wonder if they waited too late. Conservatives have long memories.

Sounds like Hastert is spreading some serious rhetoric about running with HR4437. The most postive remarks on the issue of immigration reform coming from the top House Republican I've ever heard. After the election, should the GOP hold onto the House, its enforcement first and amnesty is tossed in the trash. I like it.
Well DUH alert.
How many years did it take Denny? You folks sure are sharp back there.
I agree with that. Now, it sure would be nice if all those pouring across the border held to the same standards. As a Citizen of the United States, I know I'd appreciate it.
They waited too long for this guy. I've got a republican (at least he claims to be) governor that's not getting my vote this year. I'm fairly certain the Republican Presidential candidate in 2008 won't either.
If these folks don't want to get serious about the border, they aren't serious about wanting my vote.
I'm done with those who sell this nation out.
I like it too, and I'll be the first one to believe it after the fact. Heh heh heh...
Welcome to the party, pal!
It's about damn time!
no he didn't those are loaners and he better spit them out the owner wants them back
Since when did Mexican become a race? I believe that it describes a citizen of Mexico. Those aren't race flags being flown at the marches. Those are flags of the nation of Mexico. Along with some flags of other sovereign nations.
It's time to quit playing a phony race card thinking it will shut all the opposition up. This about *all* legitimate citizens of the USA saving themselves.
"If these folks don't want to get serious about the border, they aren't serious about wanting my vote."
Ditto.
"More action, less talk," indeed. But considering that Speaker Hastert rarely says much of anything, even talk about sealing the border is a good start.
