Aristocrat pleads guilty to check theft

The 19-year-old heir to Britain's Scarsdale title has confessed to stealing a $221,455 pension check from his neighbor.

Andrew Curzon, a student from one of Britain's oldest families, could face jail time after he admitted to writing his name on a check that was mistakenly delivered to his family's Wimbledon house, The Telegraph reported Thursday. He attempted to deposit the check, which belonged to a 70-year-old neighbor, in his bank account.

Suspicious bank officials told him to come back in a week and notified authorities. Curzon, who has been studying to be a lawyer, was arrested when he returned.

Curzon pleaded guilty to forgery and using a false instrument but magistrate Frances Wellby rejected a request by his attorney, Mandeep Sehmi, for a community service order and sent the case to crown court for sentencing.

"He cannot explain why he did what he did. The temptation must have got the better of him. He accepts what he did was totally wrong," Sehmi said.

No court date has been set and Curzon was released on unconditional bail.

"Curzon, who has been studying to be a lawyer, was arrested"

Not hitting the books too terribly hard, I take it.

Sounds like a lump-sum distribution, and the poor pensioner will be living on the interest from that sum -- about $10,000/year.

Imo, sin is more often opportunity driven rather than proclivity driven.

(no offense to anyone.)

Im not sure upper-class twits understand how checks work. He probably just assumed it was his latest trust fund check from the tenant farmers on the family estates.
