PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush are spending the weekend at Camp David. Look for the First Lady to be on the campaign trail a lot in the next few months. Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said that Mrs. Bush is a significant draw wherever she goes, and is a critical asset to Republican candidates across the country. According to the RNC, so far this campaign season, the First Lady has appeared at 24 political events and raised $10.7 million for the party and Republican candidates. Last week, she campaigned in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Next week's daily scheduled was not announced by White House Press Secretary Tony Snow. However, next week the President will visit his family home in Kennebunkport, Maine, for the first time in two years. GWB and the First Lady are scheduled to arrive Thursday at Walker's Point, where they will be spending the weekend with GWB's parents at their summer retreat. The first couple will be in town to attend a relative's wedding, said Tom Frechette, spokesman for the president's father. While at Walker's Point, the President typically goes fishing and golfing.

EXTENDED SCHEDULE:

_ Sept. 7, First Lady Laura Bush will visit Norfolk to attend a campaign rally for U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake.

_ Sept. 14, President Bush will welcome President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea to the White House.

_ Oct. 10, President Bush will welcome President Alan Garcia of Peru to the White House.

Kitty pics today?

I'll try to scan them tomorrow. Right now as I type this, one of them is laying at my feet. She's decided my left big toe needed washing. :)

So many people are uncomfortable around sick/injured people, but the President sees the PERSON, not the tubes or equipment or injuries. It has to be very difficult to see and talk to injured soldiers who he, indirectly, sent into war.

He is the personification of doing one's duty, even if it's hard. And you're right -- he looks every soldier right in the eyes, no matter what.

These are great pictures! I love how in the middle one GWB has his hand on the soldier's back--interacting, not just standing for a photo. And what a smile in the third one! He is greeting his troops--not just fulfilling a duty. Thanks for sharing these.

I sure wish that this president could have a 3rd term! We need him so badly. I am just as sure that he is ready to hang up that hat! :D The press have just been unmerciful!

I'm sure all the naysayers would say it was a publicity stunt...

The naysayers can kiss my grits. This was no publicity stunt. The soldier had said he was going to recover enough to run with the President, and GWB issued the invitation on the spot. When the soldier did, indeed, recover enough, they jogged on the WH running path.

It is new to me and I really enjoyed listening to it.

It's a wonderful song, Gretchen. Sung with such feeling. It's on my playlist at home and I play it often.

Your Themed Photos postings are stellar!

Hi Maj, how are you this Saturday evening? In some ways, I enjoy doing the themes more than posting new photos. I like focusing on one aspect at a time of this great man's tenure.

You're welcome, MeekMom. Those two photos are quite moving, in different ways.

re: 18 Wow! Our POTUS is awesome, but seeing all our troops like that...I'm speachless!!

Both of those came from military sites, and I don't think they appeared on the Dose before. Maybe similar pics of those events when they happened, but not the precise photos posted here.

There's more than one way to get some "new" photos on the Dose for us to enjoy. ;-)

Thanks for the heads up about the President's trip to Kennebunkport . . . I can't wait for the family/fishing photos!

Hi Deb. You're so very welcome. I agree. I'm looking forward to some family/fishing pics. Tony Snow has been great about announcing the Week Ahead at his Friday pressers, but he didn't announce it yesterday due to the Camp David meetings with GWB's economic advisers. Fortunately, I found some articles from Maine and New England media about the upcoming trip to Kennebunkport.

Can you imagine? He hasn't been able to visit his own ancestral family home in two years. I'm glad he's getting the time.

I sure wish that this president could have a 3rd term! We need him so badly.

I have very mixed feelings about the 22nd Amendment. It's a discussion for a different thread, but to put it simply: On the one hand, I generally favor term limits. But the amendment limited the presidential term, automatically making any 2nd term president a lame duck. It did not, however, limit Congressional terms. I think that's led to a very serious imbalance in the relationship between presidents and Congress.

I'm sure the Bush family has a lot of fun at Kennybunkport if they can stay out of view of photographers.

Hi Jonny. You'll enjoy the discussion of Brooks & Dunn, I think. As you'll see, I posted a portion of the lyrics to their terrific song, 'Believe.' Ronnie Dunn's voice is magnificent. With or without a country twang, that's the kind of male voice I've been wishing for on AI.
