Possible plane crash in Lexington, KY. My brother works security for Lexington UK Hospital and was just called in. No news locally or on major news outlets yet. I didn't want to post anything for fear of being wrong, but he's still waiting for an official call while on stand-by.

Update from WTVQ 36 Lexington:

A plane has crashed near the Blue Grass Airport this morning. No word on details at this time. We are told it was a commercial aircraft. Versailles Road is blocked as emergency vehicles circle around the site. We have live coverage beginning at 7:20am. Stay with Action News 36 for more details.

OMG!!!

Impaired??

Lets not jump to conclusions. I probably have 500 plus operations out of that airport. They would not have been cleared off the wrong runway. Possibly given a choice of runways do to weather concerns .

Lets just all wait and calm down the armchair quatr backing.

A spokesman for the University of Kentucky Hospital says that the hospital is treating one survivor, in critical condition. An FAA spokesman said she had no information on survivors.

I have family in Lexington, so this worries me.

I don't believe that I will be able to report anything more than what is already being reported. It seems that the media is on top of it now.

Runway 26/8 does not cross Versailles Road.

Runway 22/4 does cross Versailles Road and it is the longer, primary runway.

Unless they banked really hard after takeoff, it does not seem like they took the wrong runway.

Speculation is fair game. If I am going the wrong way on the freeway, it is reasonable to suspect I amy not be at the top of my game.

Thank me!

My first call out this morning was to my youngest brother who is a student at UK.

"Dude, why are you calling me at seven in the morning?"

My response, "Uh, Dude, I'm just calling to make sure that you're alive. Good to hear your voice."

I know that the town of Versailles, Indiana, is pronounced "Ver-sails". I suspect the same is true of Versailles Road.

"Ver-sails" would be correct.

22/ 4 is the main runway for commercial operations. The other is rarely used.

I'm sure it was the runway they were cleared for. Often these threads and the reports from the msm are full of speculation from aviation buffs and private pilots who while well intentioned are just out of there element.

I normally stay away from them but when someone starts speculating people are impaired and acting as if using a wrong runway is as easy as turning the wrong way down a one way street. It's just too much.

In Ky it is "ver-sales", not like the French.

Winds were SW @ 7....

Tailwind take-off.... not usually advisable...

" Speculation is fair game. If I am going the wrong way on the freeway, it is reasonable to suspect I amy not be at the top of my game. "

Don-o if your speculation is correct and I doubt it.

Then the aircraft would have taxied for almost a mile and a half in the wrong direction ( about 8 minutes) been cleared to position, at an airport with probably 5 operations in the last hour.

It's inconceivable that all that would happen at a low volume airport, especially one as professionally operated as LEX.

The last thing needed or necessary is a rumor about a impaired pilot......those people have families too.

Rumors are easy to start and hell to stop.

Aerial photos on MSNBC would seem to support your statement. It certainly looks to me as though the crash site lies directly beyond the main runway.

This may be a lightning strike.

Noisy and disruptive (scares the peeps)...
... but not a knock-you-out-of-the-sky event....

You are correct, if the winds were from the Southwest, they should takeoff on 22, not 4.

It would not be possible to cross Versailles Road if you are taking off on Runway 22 (or even 26 as a mistake!).

If you takeoff from runway 4, you would cross Versailles Road immediately after rotation.

My uncle flew for TWA for years. His plane was struck by lightning. It blew off the nose of the plane and went down the isle and out the tail. He landed the plane just fine. Our family album has a shot of him inspecting the nose after he landed.

That is why they tell you to stay in your seat. They know it goes down the middle of the airplane.

Agree, not a lightning strike.

Guess: catastrophic engine failure. However, usually only one engine goes at a time, not two. Unless there was some other system failure.
