BAE has already been given the all clear to buy some of the special submarine steel that would be needed for the new boats

Is this a layman's term for an actual type of steel, or is the author just clueless? (I suppose it could be both).

heh..i think he lost his notes...actually, there is 'special submarine steel' on the PT, right under Adamantium and next to Kryptonite.

Probably a special alloy of steel, to allow for greater depths, or lesser magnetic signature, or all the above.

The Russian's were known for making subs out of titanium alloys.

probably HY100 steel. It's a strong grade of steel, as opposed to A36.
