A uniformed National Guardsman was beaten by a strangers as he walked to a convenience store in Parkland, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported Wednesday. Investigators suspect the man was attacked because of his uniform. “The indication is it’s because he was a soldier,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. “There are some specific questions (the attackers asked) that were military related and what his involvement in the war was.” No arrests have been made in the Tuesday morning attack, and Pierce County sheriff’s deputies were seeking the public’s help in identifying the attackers. The soldier, 22, was walking on 138th Street South between A Street South and Pacific Avenue about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when an SUV pulled up beside him, deputies reported. The driver asked the soldier if he were in the military and if he’d seen any action. The driver got out of the vehicle, pulled a gun and shouted insults at the soldier, deputies reported. Four others then got out of the vehicle, knocked the soldier to the ground, and punched and kicked him. The five attackers then got back into the black SUV and drove away. The soldier suffered minor injuries and did not receive medical treatment. The attackers did not take anything from him, Troyer said. The driver of the vehicle was described as a white man, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and with a heavy build. He had short, blond hair and wore a black T-shirt and jeans. The passengers were young men. Some wore red baseball hats and red sweatshirts.

I wonder if we can do anything for this victim. I have not seen his name mentioned but it had to show up somewhere. Talk radio is sure to pick up on this story.

$1,000. Hell we could do better than that as a reward. I may just send them some money designated as part of the reward.

Any witnesses? Something sounds funny here. Short-haired white guys in baseball uniforms? Beating up a soldier? Calling him "baby-killer"?

The area is Lefty, but the demographics seem all wrong. Even Teamsters don't pull that stuff.

It sure doesn't, but until we can change the rules, we gotta play by them, and I say we exploit the rule for all we're worth.

National Guardsman attacked in Parkland

07:01 PM PDT on Wednesday, August 30, 2006

By JIM FORMAN / KING 5 News

PARKLAND, Wash. – A National Guardsman out for a walk Tuesday morning was brutally attacked.

Police say the beating happened in broad daylight off busy Pacific Avenue near 138th Street South. As the guardsman was walking to a convenience store, an SUV pulled up along side the man and the driver rolled down his window and asked the soldier was in the military and if he had seen any action.

The next thing he knew, the driver – who was toting a handgun -- jumped out with four other men and kicked him to the ground and started punching and kicking him.

Pierce County deputies are hoping a $,1,000 reward can help catch the men who launched what by all accounts was an unprovoked attack.

The attackers were reportedly in a black Chevy Suburban type SUV. The suspects are all white and some of the men in their early to mid 20's were wearing red baseball caps and red sweatshirts.

“During the assault, they called him a baby killer and made some other comments regarding the military,” Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ed Troyer said.

“At this point, our victim is black, our suspects are white, but there was no mention made of any race issues. We believe he was targeted due to wearing the military clothing and the comment that were made were about war and about his military activity and had nothing to do with race,” Troyer said.

Every violent crime is a crime of hate. The issue has become, if you hate someone for a certain reason you deserve a stiffer penalty because that person is a member of a "special group" and has greater worth to society. It is very similar to ancient times, when nobles were considered special and crimes against them were considered more heinous and deserved more severe punishment then crimes against the members of the masses.

Maybe not for the question of guilt, but if the issue is punishment, as it usually is, then I see no problem with it. If someone attacks someone because of racial hatred, then I see no reason why they should not get a longer sentence, for example. And if someone attacks someone because of their political hatred, or hatred of the military, then I see no reason why they should not get a longer sentence.

Another thing I like about the idea of hate crime legislation is that the federal government can make the hate motivation a grounds for the death penalty. The liberals who oppose the death penalty are the ones who gave us hate crime legislation. I would like to see Congress stick it back in their eye by authorizing the death penalty for hate crimes. It's a lot of fun to watch the liberals in states like North Dakota, which has outlawed the death penalty, moan about the federal death penalty cases that are being brought in their states.

This kind of thing teaches the liberals a lesson. Maybe federalizing everything isn't such a good idea.

I hate to say this because some might look up my "political connection" to this unfortunate incident with disdain. But this type of stupidity can only help candidates like the Pubbie running for the Senate in Washington State.

As someone said last night. "I hope the democrats are proud of the climate they've created".

But we are here at FR going to do anything about this, beyond a few angry words on threads?
