What needs to be done, if they edit, is to make copies of the unedited versions for all to see, and prevent the rewriting of history.

The trouble is that ABC has the copyright to all versions of the film. Hence, anybody who reproduces the unedited version, or even displays it to the general public like, for example, posting it on the Internet, will be committing a Federal felony and face substantial jail time. OTOH, telling people what the unedited version says is entirely legal. There might also be a "fair comment" exemption for playing and displaying brief excerpts from the unedited version.
