Republican Vernon Robinson, who describes himself as a black Jesse Helms, is mimicking the former North Carolina senator's most famous ad in his first foray into television.
In his 1990 victory over former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt, Mr. Helms depicted a pair of white hands crumpling a job rejection letter. "You needed that job," Mr. Helms' ad said. "And you were the best qualified. But they had to give it to a minority because of a racial quota."
Mr. Robinson, who counts the former Republican senator as a political idol, shows a pair of black hands crumpling a letter.
"You needed that job," the ad says. "And you were the best qualified. But they gave it to an illegal alien so they could pay him under the table."
Mr. Robinson, a long-shot candidate for a U.S. House seat from North Carolina, invested $30,000 in the cable television spot, the Associated Press reports.

Ride it for all you've got, Vern. It's the only shot you have in that district.
Is there any recent polling to backup this 'long-shot' assertion? I was in Greensboro last week and heard the commercial he's running to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies theme song. It's outrageously funny...and dead on right!
He's a long shot because 13 is widely regarded as a Democrat safe district. Brad Miller has been comfortably reelected since redistricting. Of all the commercials Vernon Robinson has put out, I think the "Brad Miller's Mariachi Party" one is the funniest.
If he could stay off the personal, he'd be in office already, imho. "Firebrand" doesn't even begin to describe. Establishment Republicans don't care for him, think he's burned too many bridges, and have done little to support him. But, he's quite the fundraising machine, nationally. It's always interesting whenever Ol' Vern's around.
I can think of no greater recommendation for a GOP candidate than that. "Establishment" Republicans have done more to squander opportunity than anyone else -- by abandoning winning principles in favor of fruitless compromises with sworn enemies. While some temperence is always needed, what today's GOP needs is less Establishment and more Republicans.
All that was wrong with Jesse Helms was that there was only one of him!
Don't know how much of a long shot he is...he gave Virginia Foxx all she could handle.
I got to vote FOR Vern Robinson. He's funny, irreverent and makes some darn good points.
It also a big plus to vote AGAINST Brad Miller...
If Vern gets a little money, what fun we will have in the next weeks.
Aren't these "establishment Republicans" the same folks that supported Lincoln Chafee in R.I.? If so, then to hell with them and the horse they rode in on!! Go Vern, shove it up them where the sun don't shine! I don't care who won in R.I., but it seems unfair to me for the national party to campaign against their own candidates in favor of another. That is just chickensh** politics and belittles the process of selection for all of us.
Vernon Robinson - AMERICAN
We need more honest people and fewers liars in congress. I play Vernon Robinson's audios on my internet radio stations - for their educational value.
Bob Parks - Black & Right - audios also.
McCain can K.M.A.
Where is the video of the ad. I love his ads.
Thanks for the link.
Those ads are a hoot!
Seen the ad, its pretty good but looks a little cheap. If Vernon can grab hold of something like Illegals it might help his chances, but he is still a long shot. Plus, Vernon ran in 2004 in a different district and didn't get the nomination, because he shot himself in the foot.
