I was told on another thread that McCain said he doesn't care if his position on this matter makes people not vote for him in the future (or, presumably for the presidency).
Freepers are thinking by '08 he'll split with the Republican party, pull a Ross Perot and run as an independent.

If McCain is really true to his belief then he would send out word that he would support cloture on President's planned bill but not vote for the bill and let a majority decide and then if that fails he would lay out his plan. He's hijacking the party is all he's doing and it looks like he got a couple committee member RINOs to follow him.
