David Frum a new article up at NRO. He theorizes that McCain may be trying to sabatoge the GOP because the worse the GOP does in 2006 the more his ability to ride in a save the party for 2008.
Frum at NRO
Most political observers agree that the worse Republicans do in 2006, the more likely they are to turn to McCains maverick candidacy in 2008. Republicans dont like or trust McCain, but they want to win and the more they are convinced that their party is otherwise in serious trouble, the more likely they are to believe that McCains anti-party candidacy is the solution.
McCain may have heard these theories too. If he has, and if he agrees, is it not in his interest to maximize Republican losses in 2006? If a vote on military commissions would embarrass Democrats, does it not help Democrats to prevent such a vote from occurring before Nov. 2? And what better way is there is to delay such a vote than for the ultra-hawkish McCain to raise an enormous ruckus against the president and thus provide cover for Democratic stalling techniques?
Just asking.

Politicians have tried this stunt before and it backfires almost every time and I have no doubt it will backfire on McCain this time also.

If McCain has that stupid idea....he needs to get over it.
He has never been popular with the conservatives in the GOP party...and I am SURE he will be less and less popular playing this game.
