So are they going to go under or over the mountains? Even at the southern end there are mountains. Can't imagine removing that much dirt for 50 plus miles of mounts.

In all liklihood the proposed route will follow the same route that has always been proposed.

Up the Rio Juan via locks, across Lake Nicaragua, then via deep cuts and a few locks from the lake over (and through) and down the mountains to San Juan del Sur. The last stretch is only 15-20 miles -- which would be a lot less foreboding today than it would've been around 1900.
