:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Karzai Says bin Laden Not in Afghanistan
-Full Story-

President Hamid Karzai has insisted that Osama bin Laden is not in his country, in the latest installment in a row with the leader of Pakistan who says the Al-Qaeda chief is in Afghanistan.

Other militant leaders including Islamist warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar were also not in the country, Karzai told reporters in a briefing about his visit to the United States that was overshadowed by the spat.

'I can assure you they are not in Afghanistan,' Karzai said yesterday after being asked for his reaction to comments by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf who said Thursday that bin Laden is here.

Oct. 31, 2006 at 1:18AM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Police in Georgia say that a Halloween intruder broke into a house in the Atlanta area early Monday, pretending to be an FBI agent.

The homeowner told Fulton County police he got out of bed when he heard the burglar alarm, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. He saw a man wearing a ski mask climbing the stairs, yelling, "FBI, FBI, FBI!""

Burma Army Intensifies Attacks on Karen Civilians and Fires on Displaced People in Hiding

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

BURMA (ANS) -- The continuing Burma Army offensive in Karen State has displaced a further 1,450 people in one valley alone. During the last ten days, 700 people have fled from their homes in the area north of the Mon Chaung (river) and more have fled the area south of the river following machine-gun attacks on villages and areas where Internally Displaced People are in hiding.

According to a news release from Christian Solidarity Worldwide, one villager was killed and another badly wounded during an attack on Mawn Ki village, when the Burma Army opened fire. There are currently five Burma Army columns based in the area.
“These latest attacks form part of an ongoing offensive in Karen State, which has resulted in 20,000 people being displaced from their homes,” said the release.

“UK Members of Parliament discussed the situation in Burma during a Westminster Hall debate last week. They called on the government to take a stronger stance against UK businesses operating in Burma and urged the government to raise the situation with the UN Security Council. In September, members of the Security Council, including the UK and the US, voted to include a debate on Burma in their agenda.”

Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s Chief Executive, Mervyn Thomas says: “These latest attacks form part of a deliberate and fierce offensive against the Karen people. The plight of those suffering at the hands of this brutal regime in Burma demands the immediate attention and intervention of the international community. We urge the UN Security Council to pass a binding resolution on Burma immediately, requiring an end to these atrocities, and to put in place a concrete plan for national reconciliation and a transition to peace and federal democracy."

Many of the Karen people are Christian. The Gospel was brought to them by American missionary, Adoniram Judson in the early 1800s. A

lthough their land is in what is known as the “Golden Triangle,” they do not allow drug growing or smuggling there.

The Karen’s conflict with the Burmese government began in 1948 and is over the Karen wanting to keep their unique way of life. It is the longest running civil war in the world. In a story, the BBC cited aid agencies estimates that up to 200,000 Karen have been driven from their homes during decades of war, with 120,000 more refugees from Burma, mostly Karen, living in refugee camps on the Thai side of the border.

Many Karen accuse the government of Myanmar of ethnic cleansing. The U.S. State Department has also cited the Burmese government for suppression of religious freedom, a source of particular trouble to the Karen as between thirty and forty percent of them are Christians and among the Burmese religious minority.

Dan Wooding is an award winning British journalist now living in Southern California with his wife Norma. He is the founder and international director of ASSIST (Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times) and the ASSIST News Service (ANS). He was, for ten years, a commentator, on the UPI Radio Network in Washington, DC. Wooding is the author of some 42 books, the latest of which is his autobiography, "From Tabloid to Truth", which is published by Theatron Books. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Mon Oct 30 2006 23:21:28 GMT-0800.

Mexico (Oaxaca)

October 30, 2006

This Public Announcement supersedes the Public Announcement dated August 24, which alerts U.S. citizens to the mounting violence and disorder in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico. U.S. citizens should at this time avoid travel to Oaxaca City due to this increase in violence, which has resulted in at least nine deaths over the past several months. This Public Announcement expires on November 15, 2006.

On October 27, a U.S. journalist was fatally shot in Oaxaca City amid the ongoing violence and disorder caused by civil unrest. Several protest groups have engaged in increasingly violent demonstrations in and around Oaxaca City for several months, sometimes resulting in similarly violent reactions from other groups.

The Government of Mexico ordered the mobilization of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP) force to Oaxaca City on October 28 to quell violence and restore order to the area. Protesters and the PFP are currently engaged in violent confrontations within the city. There are reports that the main highway and secondary roads linking Oaxaca City to Mexico City may be closed at any time, and flights may be temporarily delayed or cancelled at the Xoxocotlan International Airport in Oaxaca City.

U.S. citizens already in Oaxaca should avoid demonstrations, remain in their homes or hotels, and avoid the downtown and surrounding areas during demonstrations or PFP operations, as random shootings and violence may occur at any time. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence unexpectedly. Since the timing and routes of marches and demonstrations are always subject to change, U.S. citizens should monitor local media sources for new developments and exercise extreme caution while within the vicinity of any protests.

U.S. citizens are reminded to avoid participating in demonstrations and other activities that might be deemed political by Mexican authorities. The Mexican constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners, and such actions may result in detention and/or deportation.

For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current worldwide caution public announcement, travel warnings and public announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). U.S. citizens traveling or residing overseas are encouraged to register with the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate on the state department's travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov.

For any emergencies involving U.S. citizens, please contact the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, Office of Citizens' Consular Services, Reforma Ave 305, Col Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, D.F., Mexico CP 06500 Tel: (011)(52)(55) 5080-2000 or e-mail: ccs@usembassy.net.mx. st Saudi oil sites-official
reuteurs ^ | 30 Oct 2006 | reuteurs

Posted on 10/30/2006 10:54:28 PM PST by Flavius

WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - The United States is working with Saudi Arabia to ensure the kingdom's oil facilities are protected from "a credible threat" of an attack by al Qaeda, a Saudi government official said on Monday.

Al Qaeda recently said it planned to attack Saudi oil facilities and last week the United States pledged to help the kingdom after Britain's Royal Navy said that coalition forces in the Gulf had been deployed to protect the Saudi Ras Tanura Terminal, the world's biggest offshore oil facility.

"As you know, in the last few days there's been a credible threat and the United States is standing with Saudi Arabia shoulder-to-shoulder to ensure that the (oil) installations, the vital installations, are not going to be taken out," said Saudi Minister of State Abdullah Alireza.

Alireza made his comments in a speech to the annual Arab-U.S. Policymakers Conference being held in Washington.

Alireza later told Reuters that Saudi officials have stepped up security at the kingdom's oil facilities in the last few days. "They have informed people to be on the lookout. They are already securing some of these important facilities," he said.

However, the extra precaution will not slow or delay the loading of any oil tankers, the minister said. "Shipments are going to continue on time," he said.

"Hizbollah rebuilds its military force under nose of UN"
The Daily Telegraph ^ | October 31, 2006 | Michael Hirst

Posted on 10/30/2006 11:14:36 PM PST by MadIvan

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Hizbollah has stepped up the rebuilding of its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon despite the deployment in recent weeks of thousands of Lebanese troops and international peacekeepers to limit the Islamic militant group's activities.

Standing firm against international pressure to disarm, the Shia group is rearming and rebuilding tunnels and trenches destroyed by the Israeli army during this summer's 34-day war.

Locals in Bint Jbeil, a town which saw fierce fighting, told yesterday how Hizbollah was using the major reconstruction efforts to rebuild their security infrastructure.

"They are working extremely fast," said one, who did not want to be named. "Militants in Shia strongholds have interconnected tunnels and bunkers under their houses. These are being rebuilt under cover of the reconstruction work."

He said cables and telecommunications equipment had been installed and the number of trucks delivering aid and supplies made it easy to disguise weapons smuggling.

"They have a security network of hundreds of motorcycles, linked up by walkie-talkies. Wherever outsiders move in the south they are followed. You don't see guns, but Hizbollah knows exactly where you are." On the crater-lined streets of Bint Jbeil, there was evidence of substantial reconstruction and young men on motorcycles, but it was impossible to discern whether any were Hizbollah fighters."

North Korea has network of nuclear villages

Snip: North Korea has established secret towns with thousands of closely guarded residents whose sole mission is to develop nuclear weapons, a South Korean lawmaker said on Tuesday.

Up to 36,000 people, including the North's top nuclear scientists and their families, live in the villages in complete isolation in the already reclusive country, Conservative Grand National Party lawmaker Song Young-sun said in a report. "The areas where they reside are cut off from the outside -- not only geographically but also in terms of contact and communication with outsiders," Song's report said.

Fresno County authorities recover 44,000 pounds of stolen almonds

Snip: Fresno County authorities announced Monday they recovered 44,000 pounds of stolen almonds after thieves tried to sell the processed nuts on the black market.

Authorities said the thieves drove a truck full of Campos Brothers Farm almonds off the lot of a trucking company where the almonds were sent for distribution earlier this month.

Kona police arrest man with live chemical grenade

Snip: A 42-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend, Anthony J. Makahanaloa, said he had at least two live grenades.

Metrorail security guard shot to death at Miami

Snip: An armed security guard was shot and killed at a Metrorail station Sunday evening after witnesses say they saw her walking alone while on patrol.

CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez reported that Joseph-Quetel's husband also worked as a guard in the area and that she had tried to radio him for help after she was shot. But according to her husband he was unable to understand what she was saying and he ran to her side to try to help her.

Charges dropped in bus incident

Snip: Police had charged the man, Reynaldo Aquino, 28, of 76 Academy St., with loitering in a transportation facility, a violation, and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a felony. He was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail until his court appearance.

Alban said prosecutors couldn't prove Aquino had knowingly refused to get off a Trailways bus or had ever used the fake driver's license and Social Security card he carried. The documents, Alban continued, were of exceptionally poor quality.

After the case was dismissed, prosecutors turned Aquino over to agents of the Citizenship and Immigration Services, who were in court.

Last week, when Aquino refused to get off a bus or give up his bag, the Port Authority closed the terminal for two hours — disrupting hundreds of buses and thousands of customers.

Biological tests conducted on British towns

Snip: Between the winter of 1965 and November 1967 a series of government trials involving the release of "microthreads" covered in the bacteria were carried out near Swindon and Southampton. The experiments are detailed in the 1966 MoD report on the Microbiological Research Establishment at Porton Down.

New form of bacteria in feces threatening

Snip: The bacterium responsible, called Clostridium difficile, or C. difficile, has been blamed for recent outbreaks of intestinal infections in about 10 states, as well as Canada and Europe. Patients become ill with frequent bouts of watery diarrhea, fever and abdominal tenderness. The strain, identified as NAP1, appears to be more virulent than its predecessor.

New deadly strain of TB

Snip: Researchers in the US and overseas say one in 50 cases of TB is resistant to existing medication.

Fewer pirate attacks in straits

Snip: It is used by some 50,000 ships per year carrying one third of world trade, which is also why the straits remains a target . "As such, it is vital that the three littoral states’ law enforcement agencies continue to maintain their patrols to reduce the attacks," said Choong.

Choong said more than 50 per cent of pirate attacks go unreported each year.

Maritime patrols in Northern Persian Gulf

Snip: "We board these fishing dhows and find there's no fishing nets on board, just all these extra tanks for transporting fuel. All we've been doing is kicking them out of Iraqi water. We've kicked out three in the last two weeks. We'd like to get the Iraqi law enforcement agencies to work on this, but the insurgency is such in Iraq that many are concerned if they take on these big, organized oil smuggling rings, there will be retribution."

Air security boss concedes gaps in agency's coverage

Snip: Under questioning, Duchesneau said his agency screens 99.2 per cent of all passengers boarding commercial flights in Canada.
