I also worked for a company that had railroad cars of Clorine on site. When I was a rookie there, one of the old timers pointed to Ol' Glory flying in the courtyard and told me in the event of an explosion, look up and see which way She's flying and you haul ass the other direction.
Also, it's not only the lungs you need to worry about with exposure, it's all mucous membranes, including the eyes. How many soldiers were blinded by Clorine during WWI.
Thanks. They have the entire town of Apex blocked off. All of the entry points (Old Raleigh Road, 1010 rd, 55, Laura Duncan, etc...) are blocked off. I live in Cary about 6 miles away from the fire, so I'll be fine. The company I work for might not be faring so well. We have a weather front moving through right now. The winds are shifting and will be blowing the chemical fumes right at my building. Yikes...
Could you please help me? Though I've long heard of "the Triangle", I'm not quite sure where that is in NC. What roads or towns delineate it?
That was a Dow Chemical pesticide plant in Bopal, India.
A much, much, larger release of very toxic materials, into an area where the most reliable transport of people was probably on foot. It killed thousands as I recall.
Wow - I live just a few miles from there and only found out about it this AM - I'm west of 55 so I guess that's good.
As best as I can tell, at this juncture; this assessment: NC has DYNOMITE UNIVERSITIES. Awesome, absolutely awesome educational standards in higher ed. Although k-12 is lamented as "bad" here in NC, I can tell you first hand it surpasses in solid education what is being perpetrated in California. What is the private agenda, constantly ongoing in NC -- the Dem plan to promote UNIONS.
Oh, heck, I'll just say what I've assessed to date: Democrats have kept many North Carolinians in a perpetual "barefoot and pregnant" status; meaning, thinking only about their "own hungry mouths" (to borrow from the Chinese language set). Dems promise them the moon. Of course, the benefits are only going as a mere pittance, 45 cents, to the average voter; but they believe the rhetorical saying that "something is better than nothin". The bulk of the "money" is going to FRIENDS of the Democrat party.
Got to hand it to Easily, tho -- he carries the face of his office well. He manages to say very little while appearing "official".
North Carolina, IMHO, needs NEW FRESH Republican Blood - people who can cut through the "Southern" culture. I know Howlin gets perturbed by Vernon Jordan's ads; but I love 'em. Why? He's brought a new "frame of reference" to the classic southern view of their state. He's injecting a "fight back" modus in a state which has been overtired of "civil war" for overlong.
Sure, it's far more civil here than in CA. And I've learned a thing.
In CA, I'm accustomed to Confrontational Politics. Some natives here think I just need to "chill".
But what I have learned about "politics" and the culture here in NC? Politics in the state of NC is done via Passive-Agressiveness. Folks shining sweet in your face while sticking a knife in your back as you walk away from the discourse.
To get beyond and out of the rut, Confrontational Politics is necessary. This is something, I've learned, that many Southerners are uncomfortable with.
Howlin is unique; she's upfront. But general politics here in NC is passive aggressive. And with Dems in charge, there's no way to bust through that crap than to be Confrontational.
In my humble assessment, of course.
In other regards, people here in mostly rural communities are reliant upon the MSM for news. The News is Biased in favor of Democrats.
The tender dance, however, plays upon the fact that this is a huge Military-based state.
Went back and re-read my Florence King books. Am now able to understand MUCH more about what she really meant in her books.
We need a phone tree, don't we?
Pay attention to this upcoming press conference.
No, I'm all the way across the county, but I have family right on the edge of the evacuation zone.
Are you okay??
I am sure he is, or at least he's on standby.
Wow, glad to hear that you're okay, Howlin. This was bad news. Any word yet if this was an accident, caused by neglect or from "other" causes?
Is 64 blocked off at US 1? Inlaws at McGregor Downs near the lake.
The Research Triangle, commonly referred to as "The Triangle", is a metropolitan region in the Piedmont of North Carolina in the United States, anchored by the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and the town of Chapel Hill. Another popular term for this area is Raleigh-Durham, which is derived from the names from the area's two largest cities. The major research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are located in this region respectively. The "Triangle" name was cemented in the public consciousness in the 1950s with the creation of Research Triangle Park, home to numerous high-tech companies and enterprises. Although the name is commonly used to refer to the cities, "The Triangle" originally referred to the universities, whose research facilities and the educated workforce they provide are the major attraction for businesses located in the Park. The Triangle's population is the most educated in the United States, with the highest number of Ph.D.s per capita.[1] The region is not be confused with "The Triad", which is the region directly west of the Triangle.
From what I have heard, they haven't gotten close enough to it to find that out yet.
That isn't good.
Oh yeah. I'm on the other side of Pittsboro. No problems here.
TC,
I've been thinking about your welfare. Apparently you're ok.
I'm supposed to be heading to Asheville this PM. Guess I'll be taking I40 instead of my usual US64.
Howlin
Your in-laws should be ok. The wind is changing to northerly, away from them (and me).
Holly Springs and Fuquay may be in trouble though.
The area off Regency Park, due E. of the site, has some very expensive 'estates', several hockey players I'm told.
Pretty much the idea is Raleigh/Durham with Chapel Hill being sort of an outlier on the southwest and Wake Forest the same on the northeast. The focus of it is basically on West Raleigh, where I40 and US1 meet, just east of RDU airport.
How close is the fire to Cary??
