BRUSSELS -- Plans for a Muslim-only hospital in the Netherlands have sparked a heated debate over its separate all-male and all-female wings, halal food and roster of duty imams.
A populist nationalist party described the plan for the clinic in south Rotterdam as "a step backwards to the Middle Ages."
The sexes will be segregated, with male patients treated by an exclusively male nursing and medical staff and similar arrangements for female patients.
The Netherlands' once proud multicultural model, which promoted tolerance of a rapidly growing immigrant population, has been questioned in recent years, especially after the slaying of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an Islamist.
The latest dispute concerns plans for a private hospital aimed at the Netherlands' 1 million Muslims.
It is the brainchild of a health industry entrepreneur, Paul Sturkenboom, who plans to employ 45 doctors and 275 nurses. Staff will not have to be Muslims.
The plan has been attacked by the Rotterdam-based Leefbaar Rotterdam, or "Liveable Rotterdam" party, which controlled the local council until March.
Last month, the party unsuccessfully tried to have the hospital banned.
A nationalist member of parliament, Geert Wilders, has dubbed the hospital plan "apartheid."
Construction work is about to start, and the clinic aims to open by 2008.
Mr. Sturkenboom defended his project.
"If Mr. Wilders is saying in a xenophobic way that this will prohibit integration of Muslim Dutch citizens, we just point to the fact that 20 or 30 years ago, Jewish, Roman Catholic and Protestant Dutch people had their own schools, their own hospitals, their own trade unions and employers' organizations" he said.
"That autonomy helped those people integrate at their own speed into Dutch society. This compact hospital will give Muslims time to integrate..."

Boy, Maybe they'll make special hospitals for Christians, Nazis, Soccer holigans, beer lovers, athiests, the list of how we can be divided out of 'respect' is endless. I'm going to the nudist hospital myself......ha!
A triumph of multiculturalism!
Change the idea to a hospital ship that takes them back to the Middle East.
As tolerance spreads in America we fall farther and farther away from our roots. Tolerence is in no way a plus to any society that is based in freedom. It destroys our basis in being.

I'd give them 'time to integrate'- the time it takes to decide whether they want medical care-or wish to go untreated altogether.
Actually- I have a big problem with Muslims being in hospitals at all. As staff or patients.
If they want separate hospitals- let them build and run them themselves; send less money to terrorists.
Would the Netherlands build separate hospitals,ect, for Catholics, Jews, Sikhs,Buddhists? Somehow I think not.
Catering to these neanderthals in the name of sensitivity has got to stop.
Personally- I'd ship all sick Muslims to Saudi Arabia. The hospitals they seek are already there.
It'll be overrun with Turkish moozlims, like all of Europe will if Turkey is admitted to the EU for a second go at their Moor/Ottoman Caliphate.
Well, something like 50,000 Dutch are leaving every year (that would be like a million Americans emigrating annually), so those who are "getting it" realize the situation is hopeless.
In 15 years, only the Islamofascists and the elderly will be left.

Uh-huh. I don't recall either the Jews, Roman Catholics or Protestant Dutch people going out of their way to wreck national cultures one nation at a time or threaten kill an entire people if they didn't comply. You poor bastards in the Netherlands are only now beginning to understand that multiculturalism is a virus spread by psychotics attempting to remake the world in their own image, or destroy nations in the process..
That is the crucial question. Also, what if any constraints on the use of the Emergency Room?
This was a Clintonesque deflection. Those other faiths built their hospitals and schools THEMSELVES, with their own money and through their own efforts, not by some third party seeking to accomodate their faith. The difference is enormous. And you can bet your bottom dollar that those Catholic hospitals he mentioned dispensed medical treatment to everyone. It is only logical that Catholics, Protestants and Jews found their own schools, where else are they going to learn their faith, history and traditions? This hospital project is just another case of timid Westerners bowing and scraping to the bully cult of islam.
