The making of an überhawk.Neo-McCain

... if McCain were to reevaluate his positions on the Middle East, he might make a very effective president. He has the ability to lead and a good sense, domestically, of where the country ought to go. Indeed, I talked to several liberals who know McCain and who opposed the Iraq war but who still wouldn't mind seeing him in the White House.

Gary Hart laments McCain's embrace of the neocons, but still likes the idea of a McCain presidency and was worried that his enthusiasm might "sink his chances." A former top aide to a leading Democratic presidential contender admitted being ready to pull the lever for McCain in 2008: "I would rather have someone standing up for their point of view than trimming their sails like Hillary [Clinton] or John [Kerry] are. A lot of my friends think that, too."

Part of McCain's attraction for me and other opponents of the Iraq war is that his hawkishness would give him the credibility to sell a diplomatic alternative to the imbroglio that Bush has created in the Middle East. Indeed, he is probably the best equipped of all the potential presidential candidates to extricate the United States from the ditch into which it has fallen. But doing so would require him to break substantially with his own recent history.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

I would like to hear from anyone that has changed their mind re: a McCain presidency.

It seems that those people/pundits that have no power to elect McCain are the only ones supporting him.

I have not changed my mind on McCain.

I will not vote for him in the Pubbie Primary.

But if it comes between him and, say, Hitlery or Lurch, I'll hold my nose and vote for him.

McCain is just like Perot - one day they sound sensible, the next day they are muttering about political operatives disrupting their daughter's wedding.

I won't vote for McCain.

If McCain is on the ballot I will vote for any other morally palatable choice. If there aren't any, I'll write in my own name.

For those who want to depend upon a Sophie's Choice obliging me to vote McCain out of fear of something worse, think about it. Don't put me in that position. If McCain is the best the party has to offer, the party is broken.

You would prefer the Donky Dominatrix?

Or the Living-dead Lurch?

Or perhaps the Bulbous Tennessee Bourbon, Gore?

Or maybe even the Perfumed and Coiffed Edwards?

He's a kook, he's old, he's sick. He has the taint of corruption that he's always so huffily indignant about--I despise the way he treated his first wife. His political career was financed by daddy-in-law of the New Blonde Wife. Republican women are going to hate him, if they don't already. Just because Fred Barnes adores him, doesn't mean Mrs. Joe Sixpack will.

ARE YOU CRAZY, RNC?

The liberals are forever alluring-- seducing McKook--"Just betray the conservatives, and we'll put you into office. Such a fine maverick you are. Maverick is his name." And, having betrayed the conservatives--the liberals will then betray him.

I have real questions concerning his mental and emotional stability; if elected, would he become our Chavez?

McCain is pretty damn near dead last on my list. Certainly, I'd vote for Rudi first. Also Romney.

'Course, there aren't any good choices.

Maybe by the time Pelosi has reeked havoc for a couple of years, we can rehabilitate Tancredo. Or maybe by then, bombing Mecca will be seen as a good idea.

Please don't refer to Hillary as a Dominatrix.
That is just insulting to dominatrixes.

re: For those who want to depend upon a Sophie's Choice obliging me to vote McCain out of fear of something worse)))

I call this the Hillary Sock Puppet tactic. Just wave the puppet and go "boo!" and supposedly every Republican will have to swallow what the elites dish out.

I view the choice as between a crook and a kook.

Boy, there sure does seem to be a major effort to rehabilitate McCains image and shove him down our throats. Sorry, no sale.
