Just saw Flags of our Fathers...(Vanity)

What a great movie. Clint Eastwood has done a masterful job showing the terrible struggle we faced at Iwo Jima. It focuses mainly on the three men who were on the war bond tour after the flag was planted. This film should be nominated for Best Picture. Go see it this weekend.

Clint's had a great career. I used to get made fun of by my snobby lib sister and mom re: my love of Clint, but I love the guy.

Just imagine what the NYT and today's dems and libs would have to say about how we treated the enemy on Iwo. They didn't get lawyers, miranda rights, geneva rights or any thing like that. It's a shame, but I doubt a victory like Iwo is possible in today's climate.

The movie is based on a great book. Glad to hear someone thinks the movie hasn't messed it up. Also, if you've never heard it, listen to Johnny Cash's version of "The Ballad of Ira Hayes." It will bring a tear to your eye.

When I was stationed in Japan I got to go to Iwo Jima for training several times. Until you get there you can't get a picture for how small the island is. Then you think of how many people died there and it really hits you.

That is the problem with today's news media. You could drag them there and give them a history lesson (since most probably don't know why Iwo is important) and they still wouldn't get it.

Clint Eastwood went from a stereotyped "tough guy" actor in the 1950's and 1960's to perhaps the most respected director out there today. He's won two Best Director Oscars and given the fact he's enormously well-liked in the movie industry (mostly because he does great films without busting the production budget) I wouldn't be surprised that Eastwood wins another Best Director Oscar for Flags of Our Fathers.

It's probably going to be very difficult to beat "The Departed" for any Oscars this year.

In 1995, I was in Japan on business. At Hanaida (Tokyo) city airport, I was waiting for a flight to the Kyoto area.

In the waiting area was an old man, with navy blazer, war ribbons and what was a VFW-like hat and a Shinto priest (white robes, shaved head).

It then dawned on me this was the 50th anneversary of Iwo and they were likely going there for the ceremonies.

It was one of the more strange events in my life. 50 years earlier, the old guy would have been young and done all he could to kill me as I would have done to him. I did not acknowledge the old man, It was just too strange.

Hopefully Clint's movie brings out those feelings.

I disagree. Martin Scorcese is not exactly well-liked outside of the US Northeast among AMPAS voters, otherwise he would have won a Best Director Oscar a long time ago for either Taxi Driver or Raging Bull.

What do you expect? Journalists are people who didn't have the brains to major in science or engineering in college.

That's what I thought too. I got my bottle of Iwo Jima sand.

I saw the movie last night at a screening in Seattle attended by Michael Medved. Most people seemed to like the movie, but I thought it was ponderous, pretentious, and ultimately boring. About 1/3 of the movie was the battle itself, and that was exciting; but the rest of it was heavy-handed and painful to watch at times. I thought the "white people are racist" angle was hilariously overdone. I predict this film will be a liberal's wet dream due to its focus on government propaganda in wartime and how the U.S. government lied to the people during "The Good War". It felt like an anti-war film to me.

A good patriotic film will help Americans realize what a war is and will connect them more also with what is going on in the war on terror.

Not good for Democrats seeking seats in a few weeks. :-)
