Now Even Yanks Claim UK Asylum
The Sun [UK] ^ | October 16, 2006 | Alex Peake

Posted on 10/15/2006 7:30:16 PM PDT by quidnunc

Britain is such a soft touch that even Americans are coming here to claim asylum and sponge off the state.

The incredible revelation comes from immigration whistleblower Rory Clarke.

And yesterday the Government was forced to admit figures that backed him up.

Disgusted Rory, 34, contacted The Sun to expose the true depth of the asylum shambles. He said:

Britain is seen as such a soft touch that poor people from countries such as America are even coming here now.

A couple of years ago I met two black guys from the States who were over here because they thought they could get a better standard of living.

One was from Ohio and the other from Kansas. They claimed asylum because they said they were racially discriminated against at home.

But they freely admitted they were here for the free healthcare and accommodation. It is an absolute joke.

They could have been here for up to five years before their application was processed.

Last night the Home Office admitted five American nationals have claimed asylum this year alone.

What is the financial incentive?

I don't know if there is a financial incentive, I think it's more cultural and the Brits getting sick of the decline in English society.

Tired of political correctness, taxes, "multiculturalism" and everyday restrictions and loss of freedom.

Maybe they're tired of driving on the "wrong" side of the road also.

Maybe it's banger and mash or bubble and squeak?

Amazing! If the "Katrina Victims" and reparations proponents hear about this, British Airways will be quite busy.

Why don't people just try and lift themselves up? There's even a new magazine "Millionaire Blueprints" (google it) that features self-made millionaires explaining their success in a detailed, step-by-step manner.

You are aware, aren't you, that the Sun wrties such pieces as an exercise in rabble rousing rather than reporting?

The aim is not praise the openness of the sytem with a big woo-hoo, but to get the average man in the street annoyed about it.

The tactic works.

A less widely reported statistic is that two-thirds of Britons who move abroad move back again within two years! The grass is always greener...

There's really nothing new about this, and there's only a limited degree to which it can be attributed to current conditions, whether in Britain or the new host country. Britons have always been a wandering and restless people, a characteristic which on the whole has served us rather well over the centuries.

Hello,
We've been living in Paris for 5 years now, and have heard of more and more English buying country property due to the high prices in the UK.
I just can't imagine that taxes could be any better in France, because the rates are so ridiculous here...
Perhaps with a 'Pound' income and a 'Euro' price-tag, it makes sense. I don't know enough about tax details. (Even just here in France, I'm almost clueless..)

It is almost impossible for a healthy man to receive wealfare in the States. One exception is if they are custodians of young children. They could get limited benefits by claiming a mental disorder ("crazy checks") but the process is degrading and the benefits limited.

they will find out they will have it better here despite all their laziness and self created poverty.

I dunno, I met people who were on the dole in Sweden in 1973 and clearly they were better off than a lot of working people in the States. Of course Sweden at that time had very strict immigration policies. I suspect you'd be better off on the dole in the UK than trying to scratch out a living at minimum wage in the States.

Darn! I thought they were offering asylum to the Damned NY Yankees. Then I was going to pounce in and offer them, and Hitlery, to France.

The phenomenon you mention is almost entirely the consequence of the absurdly inflated property market in England, especially in London in the south-east. This means that you can sell a modest semi in a London suburb and still have plenty of change left over after buying a huge farmhouse somewhere in la France profonde where no Frenchman wants to live.

That said, a lot of this market is for second homes abroad rather than actual emigration. Several generations of postwar prosperity mean that a lot of middle-aged British people of quite average means are acquiring additional unencumbered property on the death of their parents, and this is often exchanged for a second home in France or elsewhere.

Tired of political correctness, taxes, "multiculturalism" and everyday restrictions and loss of freedom.

If an Englishman is tired of the above, then the last place he moves to is France to get away from them!

The reason why we're buying so much property abroad is simply because we can afford to. We have the highest house prices in the world and thus a lot of people are cashing in their equity and buying second homes - mainly winter homes - in warmer climes.

Whether this story is BS or not I hope it gets widely reported in the UK. The recipients of state aid there (who can read) who I have had the "pleasure" of meeting certainly hold no love for the Yanks and won't like this one bit. Maybe they'll be so outraged that they will want off the dole and this story will help bring about the end to the welfare state in the UK and eventually the rest of Europe. you may say i'm a dreamer....but i'm not the only one......

Yeah, but why drag down our friends the Brits?
I would like to guess that you wouldn't consider the brits who live on the dole to be your friends.

I agree and please see my post #33 for my sarcastic (yet hopeful?) take on it

Very interesting, all that...
I'm not sure what 'on the dole' means in the UK, (I'm American), but in France almost everyone is automatically. There are benefits for almost everything (except elder-care).
Pregnancy benefits, child benefits, 'bons de vacance' (like vacation checks). You'd have to be financially irresponsible to refuse to send your health bills in to the 'Sécurité Sociale' for reimbursement. (Public costs are deducted from wages, and serve as a national health insurance membership.)
I've read of some astronomical amounts of money that some
radical moslems have been milking from the system and it's not quite clear to me how you can make such a large amount from 'the dole'.

it's not quite clear to me how you can make such a large amount from 'the dole'.

'On the dole' in Britain usually refers to Unemployment Benefit which you get if you're not working (equates to about £55/$90 per week). However if you're unfit for work there are various benefits such Income Support (which usually amounts to the same figure) and various top-ups for disabilities etc.

If you're claiming any of the above you're eligible for Housing Benefit which is matched in line with local rents - for example I know single people renting a studio flat in central London at £175 per week - all paid for by the taxpayer.

On top of all this there are other 'bonuses' for children, elderly payments, money towards fuel, free prescriptions etc. Health care is of course 'free' to everyone so there are no reimbursements required.

The system is overly generous - although in line with the wealthier European countries - however it is easily fraudable. There are hundreds and hundreds of stories every year of massive cases of fraud - some in the millions of Pounds region. It's a well-known fact that if criminal gangs want to make the easiest of bucks, then they just defraud the Benefit system.

From the article:

“What really scares me is that we have no idea who is coming into the country. Less than a third of those here illegally have official papers or any identification. We let people in and take their word for who they are and what they are doing in Britain. Nobody knows if they are murderers, rapists or even terrorists."
