Her given name, the story goes, was Hildegard, and she was born in a bunker under the city of Berlin in the waning days of WWII. (Of her parents it is known that her father had a moustache and that he married her mother just before they both died.) She became an orphan when her poor parents perished by their own hands shortly after her birth, and a few months later she arrived on an orphan ship in Chicago, where a kindly couple the Rodhams adopted the unfortunate creature.
