American Couple Has Close Encounter with Shari'a in Malaysia ( Religion of Peace )

The forces of radical Islam are getting very bold in Malaysia; an American couple was subjected to a humiliating, terrifying 2 am khalwat inspection by “religious enforcement officers:”

Retired American policeman Randal Barnhart, who was subjected to a 2am raid by religious enforcement officers, is reconsidering his plan to make Malaysia his second home.

“After that unpleasant episode two weeks ago, I do not feel like making Malaysia my second home. It is a pity because both my wife and I really love Langkawi,” he said.

On Oct 12, Barnhart, 62, and his wife Carole, 61, were in their rented condominium in Kuah when enforcement officers continuously knocked on their door at 2am, accusing them of committing khalwat (close proximity).

He said the officers demanded to see his marriage certificate, although he had told them that they were Christians and should not be subjected to Islamic law.

“We find it difficult to forget the unpleasant episode. My wife was so terrified by the incident that she fears sleeping in that condominium,” he added.

Banhart said the officers were rude and insisted on “seeing the woman” when he opened the door. “My wife had to show herself despite only having a sarong on at that time. We felt humiliated for being treated this way,” he said.

He said he had to send his wife back to the United States on the next available flight because she feared people might return to the condominium to terrify her in the middle of the night.

She flew home on Wednesday.

“I want the religious department to apologise to me and my wife in writing,”

You stated you do what's easiest for you and everyone else should accommodate and excuse you.

Then you whine that others do worse.

I'm just pointing out the obvious cognitive dissonance it creates. It's actually quite funny on a conservative forum where traditional values like manners, personal responsibility and doing what's right because it's right are prized.

i stated that i've seen worse but that's all...i've seen it. i've made no fuss about it. that's not whining, just simply pointing out that no one else has made such a fuss. i didn't say all "should accomodate", but kindly asked to overlook my style.

do you, when out in public, openly correct a stranger's grammar or vocabulary which may be severely lacking? i wouldn't do that to a stranger because it is rude. if they got their point across and it was not offensive, i'd leave it be. obviously, if they were foul in getting their point across, i might find it necessary to speak up.

i've been reading FR for a while now and only recently found the time and courage to post. i've been familiar with your screen name and found you to be one of the more intelligent & reasonable posters that i'd come to admire. however, my feelings are beginning to change. i've plenty of manners, thank you, and i use them quite often. i've admitted when & why i do & don't use the shift key. you are not my english professor and neither is anyone else on FR. you have the option of NOT reading my ill-mannered typing style. that's your choice. i'd hate to think what kind of wrath would come my way if i were the queen of typos.

Again, I didn't comment on your lack of punctation, but rather your rationalization for not doing what you obviously are capable of doing and the cognitive dissonance it entails.

If you were the queen of typos, I wouldn't have commented at all. There is a big difference between being a poor typist and one who is capable but indifferent to good communication.

Look at your original statement
the fact that i don't use the shift key while i TYPE shouldn't make a difference, imho. when i WRITE, i do, of course, use capital letters. and my spoken english far outshines many i come across, even if i speak it with a strong n. texas twang. furthermore, i'm not writing a college thesis or anything that would require me to use proper typing etiquette.

You are stating that you can use proper punctuation if there is something in it for you (like a grade) or if not using it would negatively affect you. The logical inference is that you don't think potential readers are important enough to bother with punctuation, but this shouldn't make a difference to how those potential readers read and respond to your posts.

I'm merely pointing out that your desire that your deliberate lack of "style" not effect the substance of your posts is not reality based. Some will judge you, others will simply ignore you.

The reality is that refusal to use standard punctuation is bad manners and will be perceived as bad manners.

i've plenty of manners, thank you, and i use them quite often.

No one doubts you have manners, the question is, "Are they good ones?"

I couldn't resist the temptation, sorry. I really don't intend to aggravate you. I just find your desire to treat FR readers as unimportant or less important than an English professor (hypothetically or real) as barbaric and uncivilized, just another chink in the mortar of society.

If you regard good manners as only for what's important to you, then you don't really have good manners, do you? You only pretend to have them as a ploy to aid you in material success.

I truly just wanted to point out the contradiction of it as a feature of what's wrong with our culture today (a common topic on FR). You illustrate it admirably.

"Gosh, you remember me? I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. : )"

Definately a good thing. You were gracious enough to give me pointers on how to set up my home page. Mine's nowhere as great as yours, but it works for me.

As to home prices....Yes, outlandish. You have to go to the rural area's to get better housing prices, but then you're dealing with low paying jobs. Wisconsin is just as bad. Good farm land is also going through the roof, because of the outstate hunters buying up the land for hunting.

Another beautiful area to site see is along the Mississippi. Winona, Red Wing and Lake City, are all fascinating towns. Lake City is my favorite for the Mississippi views.

The purpose of language usage, including punctuation, grammar, capitalization, etc., etc. is to communicate.

If you expect people to communicate with you, you should expect complaints when you ignore the rules of English Grammar.

It really is not difficult to press the shift key.

I have not read your entire post because it is illegible, and I won't read it, either.

Grow up!

Too bad he had to leave his weapon at home.

The first thing a person who knocks on my door at 2 AM can expect to see is my Mossberg 12 gauge!

I'm not sure which is worse: That picture of Babs or the Helen Thomas glamor shot.

why anyone, Christian or otherwise would want to go live in a country with a majority of...any muslims is beyond me.
