Webb Defends Novels Against Attacks (cleaning off the fan in Virginia)
The Washington Post ^ | October 29, 2006 | Tim Craig and Michael D. Shear

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate James Webb yesterday delivered his strongest criticism of incumbent Sen. George Allen of the fall campaign, vigorously defending himself against Allen's charges that he wrote sex-laced passages in his fiction novels.

He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaign, who released excerpts Thursday from Webb's novels to the Drudge Report Web site and said the writings were lurid and inappropriate for a man seeking to serve in the Senate.

"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said, referring to his belief that Allen (R) is responsible for his campaign staff's tactics and has now shown his true character. "Our government should no longer be in the hands of a group of unprincipled, small-minded, power-hungry character assassins."

The Washington Post is trying to salvage the campaign of its hand-picked candidate.

"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said

Hey, you wrote it. It would not appear in any book I wrote.

Dear Washington Post: Please explain to me why Mr. Foley's mash notes to little boys is appropriate for political commentary but Mr. Webb's bizzare sexual descriptions are not.

Could it be that one is a Republican and the other a Defeatocrat?

That's what you call desperation from a man with zero character, James Webb.

His sister, with whom I don't think he's on good terms with, wrote a book that portrayed him unfavorably.

If anyone is waging a smear campaign, it's Jim Webb. Allen is only striking back.

Allen's siblings have commented at various times over the years that he was something of a bully toward them. This is not news in Virginia.

This does reflect badly on Allen's character in his youth, but it doesn't disqualify him from holding public office in his 50's.

Jim Webb has waged a campaign of nothing but personal attacks and name-calling. He just can't stand the fact that Allen is fighting back.

I am quite unhappy with the Allen campaign using books to attack Webb. It politicizes writing. Newt Gingrich, Scooter Libby and Lynne Cheney have all put rather bizarre sex scenes in their books, and to take just the disturbing parts and isolate them from the rest of the book is disingenious.

Frankly I have read "Fields of Fire" and liked it very much, and my vietnam vet uncle is a very big fan of Webb's writing.

Allen should hit Webb on the issues, instead of going after his writing

""Fields of Fire," a novel about the Vietnam War, has been on the Marine Corps reading list for 20 years"

I don't know this "reading list", but it implies that his work has been an "open book" (pun intended) for several years, and just pulling it out of a hat now makes Allen look more desperate than he should be at this point in the campaign.

I'm not. The books may be good; but the individual passages show a sickish mind; maybe OK for Hollyweirdos, but not for a guy running for high office.

At a time when US morals are decaying and marriages foundering, we don't need writers of smut in the Senate.

Webb's got problems with women. I'm glad Allen's pointing it out for voters who may not know about it.

"Allen should hit Webb on the issues"

To put as kindly as possible, Jim Webb has not campaigned on the issues. His whole campaign has been one of belligerent name-calling. I have rarely seen a candidate get as personal in his attacks as Webb has. Allen is just giving his opponent a dose of his own medicine.

Character is an issue in this campaign. Webb made it an issue with the whole Macaca kerfuffle.

what stupid stuff people did as kids shouldn't be an issue at all

I would hate to run for office and have my little brother tell voters that I used to give him wedgies or that one time we shot a neighbor with a BB gun

Allen being rough with his siblings is no different and isn't even worth worrying about

Aha! Dazzling wisdom plagarized from the lips of that famous tank-driver and scion of the seed of Lesbos, the Hon. Michael du Cacas. One wishes that Gentleman Jimmy at least would give credit where credit is due!
