WASHINGTON, Oct. 31, 2006 — If you're single and in your 20s, the federal government wants you to steer clear of sex.

That's the new guidance for states under the Department of Health and Human Services' $50 million Abstinence Education Program....

"Whatever happened to conservatives that were against big government," Wagoner asks. "If this isn't a waste of taxpayer dollars, what is?"

And it may not be "your side" making the rules. Better to just get the government out of everything but its most essential tasks.

Is it me, or was there a time when this was part of the Republican agenda?

There is no right to act in a way that's morally evil. No right to abortion. No right to sodomy. No right to adultery. No right to pornography. A government that protects such false "rights" is one that does great harm to its citizens and which will eventually become overtly tyrannical. An immoral or amoral republic can not exist for any great length of time before devolving into tyranny.

So government must imprison unmarried adults who have sex, because otherwise we'd have tyranny. Thanks for clearing that up.

That is what I am saying. I have seen it too many times. Including my own.

"It is the most basic of human needs"

1st, it is not a "need". It is a want. Not having sex will NOT hurt your individual health. Trust me on that last.

2nd, the most basic NEED is FOOD. Then protection from the elements - clothing, and shelter.

No, you're confused. Man's rights descend from Natural Law as ordained by God. There is no right to act in a way that's morally evil. No right to abortion. No right to sodomy. No right to adultery. No right to pornography. A government that protects such false "rights" is one that does great harm to its citizens and which will eventually become overtly tyrannical. Holy cow! You're actually serious!

Heck, we fought a civil war about a moral issue.

The purpose of the Civil War was, apparently, to enfranchise people of color so that they could vote en bloc for the party of those who had formerly oppressed them.

Ah, but I'm being bitter...no point to that. =]

Rush is reading us here. The point is to avoid sex if you are just going to screw it up. 40 is the right age to make love IMHO.

I too have vague memories of Republicans at least pretending to care about limited government.

My favorite comment on this topic was by Ronald Reagan (who probably would be jailed by some here for having a morally evil divorce) when he was Governor of California, speaking about some antiwar protestors:

"The other day I saw some young people carrying signs that said 'Make Love, Not War'. Trouble is, they looked like they didn't know how to do either."

It is a shame that virginity has become something bad.

If sex between two people who love each other is not a need then why did God create an attraction to each other. (ie when a man gets horny why does he get an erection). Sorry it is a need.

R u Pentecostal or something.

I kid around alot on these threads -- but my brain shut down on some of the comments made here.

Ironically, the hyper-moralsts don't seem to realize their position is a lot like sex -- in that they don't realize or grasp the potential consequences of their desires.

In general, they used to be a little closer to this line of thinking. I don't think they've ever fully embraced this philosophy, however.

After all, a variety of laws regulating personal behavior were and still are on the books. These laws were written by both Democrats and Republicans.

Picking a good wife is luck of the draw bro. You have no idea what you are going to get.

Is this an official declaration that the rest of the message of Berkeley in the sixties was wrong and destructive?

We told the left their message of godless narcissism was wrong and destructive over forty years ago. Now where is the roll back against values neutral paganism and where are the apologies?

I have less sex now that I'm married! What's going on here?

Why doesn't the government just encourage people to marry by 20, then there'd be less people under 30 having sex!
