Iraq court begins Saddam verdict
BBC ^ | November 6, 2006

A court in Baghdad has begun its session to deliver the verdict in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity.

Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants were charged with killing 148 villagers in the mostly Shia town of Dujail.

If found guilty, Saddam could be sentenced to death.

A total curfew was imposed on Baghdad and two other provinces ahead of the verdict, amid fears of a violent reaction from Saddam's supporters.

IMO, this sentence could help Republicans to win. It will remember US citizens that we are in war.

It is helpful from that standpoint. And here's an updated version, though the verdict still has not been given: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6117910.stm .

"Saddam Hussein verdict hearing begins"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's High Tribunal has begun its session on Sunday where it will announce verdicts and sentences for Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants in the Dujail case.

One by one the eight defendants, including Hussein, were to file into the courtroom to receive their sentences from a five-judge panel.

Mohammed Azzawi Ali, a former Dujail Baath Party official, was the first defendant in the courtroom. Defense attorney Ramsey Clark was also in court.

Hussein could be sentenced to death by hanging for his role in a brutal crackdown nearly 25 years ago in Dujail -- the once obscure Iraqi town that is now a symbol of his regime's cruelty.

The tribunal meeting in Baghdad to render verdicts for the co-defendants for their roles in a widescale, systematic attack on the Shiite town after someone tried to assassinate Hussein during a visit on July 8, 1982.

The prosecution is seeking the death penalty for the former dictator and two other defendants -- Barzan Hassan, Hussein's half-brother and former head of the intelligence agency, and Taha Yassin Ramadan, a former member of Hussein's Revolutionary Command Council. Police say U-S and Iraqi security forces kill 53 suspected insurgents
AP

BAGHDAD, Iraq Police in Iraq report more than 50 suspected insurgents have been killed in a raid south of Baghdad by U-S and Iraqi security forces.

A police lieutenant says the raid targeted an area of fruit farms where U-S and government troops have been repeatedly attacked by militants believed to be members of the al-Qaida-in-Iraq terrorist group.
The official says ground troops with air support launched the raid Saturday night after being tipped that more attacks were planned for Sunday to coincide with the verdict in the Saddam Hussein trial.
