Signed in to vote this morning in Tidewater, VA, and was asked to try the new electronic voting machine for the first time. "It's much faster and easier!", the poll manager explined to me. "It will get you through and out the door much faster."

And it might have, except for the older (50-60) woman in front of me trying to figure out how to use the touch screen. Like the proverbial longest line at the express checkout, we ended up with five people in line waiting for her to figure out the machine. After 5 minutes, some people asked for paper ballots just so they could cast their votes and leave for work.

Finally, I got my chance to vote after 8 minutes of waiting. (The operator REALLY didn't want me to leave.) In less than a minute without help, I cast my votes including writing in Ronald MacDonald to oppose Bobby Scott (D). (Scott is the beneficiary of a gerrymandered Democratic district.) The electronic machine was faster and easier to use, as long as the user knows what he/she is doing.

Anyway, just my story from this morning...

Hah. When you are fifty or sixty, I'm going to remind you that you said the "older" (50-60) woman was slow that day long ago at the polls. I can see it now. You'll have sore arthritic (slightly) hands and will forget your reading glasses and have to ask for a magnifying glass to see the voting screen. (I'll be the 90 yr. old lady in front of you who takes 20 minutes to vote. You'll take at least 15 minutes and some young dude behind you will be chomping at the bit. I shall cackle.)
