Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Attorney General Greg Abbott led a Republican sweep of statewide offices Tuesday as Democrats were routed in every contest save the governor's race thanks to huge campaign funding advantages and continuing GOP voting trends in Texas.
Other Republican incumbents joining Mr. Dewhurst and Mr. Abbott with big wins in Tuesday's election were state Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and state Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones.
. . .
Republican Susan Combs, now agriculture commissioner, was easily elected state comptroller, and Republican Todd Staples, a state senator from East Texas, captured the race for agriculture commissioner over an underfunded Democratic opponent.
All of the Republicans were garnering 55 percent to 60 percent of the vote in their respective contests, cementing the dominance in statewide races that the GOP has held since 1998.

Explain Please? They are nowhere on the page. Dist .s 21 and I think 25, Bonilla
That is very cool! I didn't know that. Congrats, Corpus Christians!
Love to write that - I *were* a Spohn baby.
It wasn't that great of a night for the GOP. Republican judges in Bexar and Dallas county got creamed. I believe all republicans, save one or two, who were in a contested race lost. About half of which were incumbents. We lost five state house seats (six for the year). Republicans were tossed out in nominal GOP Hays County. Some good Appeals Court judges lost. While it is good the statewide candidate won, those races really weren't in question. If the State GOP doesn't get its act together, these results from Bexar and Dallas county are a bad sign.
Thank you!
That's where I was born too. They no longer have a maternity ward at their Ocean Drive location. They moved it to their new Southside location out on Saratoga back in 1994.
I didn't realize that. Does it even have "Spohn" in the name anymore?
IIRC there was a large bloc of rat judges running unopposed in Bexar county.
Yes, they merged with CHRISTUS (another Catholic hospital system) and are now CHRISTUS Spohn. They have several hospitals in south Texas.
Oh, I knew that. Not thinking today at all. It's like I woke up in a whole new world, ya know?
Well, I haven't visited CC in quite a while, so I'm sure there are lots of changes everywhere. Beautiful little city.
Except for downtown. I'd like to see more of the real estate downtown cleared of its junky buildings. Much of the development is west of SPID even west of Saratoga. Unfortunately a large number of restaurants have closed down in the last few months. Many of the ones remaining are mostly along SPID. I don't really think it's good for the city for most of the restaurants to be located along a freeway. There's no view of the bay there. Why should people go out of their way traveling to Corpus Christi to go to the same chain restaurants located next to a freeway that they could go to on a freeway nearer to home? Downtown Corpus Christi is just about the only location where there is commercial real estate that has views of the bay. Everything else is mostly residential till you get to TAMUCC which is located on its own island.
Sorry to say I haven't been to that part of Padre in a million years. We had grown fond of the south end and always went straight down there to Port Isabel.
Now that you mention that about the bay views (or even Gulf views), I realized more people I know go to Rockport these days than into CC.
No, I'm sure the strip-type restaurants along the way to SP wouldn't appeal to me - BUT, you'd be amazed how many people *like* the sameness of those places.
What about all the great Mexican food places - and some of those little Mexican village-type shops and things around the - what is it - not "four corners" - "five points"? Is that right?
I left CC as a tiny baby, but only visited off and on through the years, after that. Had some family there, tho, so visits were frequent.
But Bonilla is still suppose to win in the runoff is he not?
If everyone who voted for her in the Special had written her in she would have won the General as well.
Lampson will not keep that seat in 08.
I didn't realize that - I should've looked, but I'm glad you did.
It didn't make much sense the way it came out. It still doesn't! Thanks for the info, tho it just makes me more "thumped," I think.
I know. Just some humor during very sad times.
Anything but Secretary of our Border Patrol:')
Wait.....I thought Texas was one of those "changing demographics" states because we all know Hispanics will vote Democrat!
Republicans do not need to cater to illegal immigrants to garner the Hispanic vote; traditional Hispanic values are very pro-Republican. We need to make that clear!
I think it's simply because the Democrats do not have their voter fraud machine up and running in Texas. Hopefully, it will never happen!
God Bless Texas! GG
