Conservatives Mobilize Against Wal-Mart
CNS News ^ | 11/09/06 | Susan Jones

Wal-Mart, long pummeled by the political left, is taking additional flak from the right.

A conservative activist group is trying to recruit one million families who will refuse to shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, traditionally two of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The American Family Association is furious with Wal-Mart for reaching out to homosexual advocacy groups that support same-sex marriage.

The criticism began when Wal-Mart announced it would join the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. And now Wal-Mart has made a deal with the Washington DC Center for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender People, agreeing to donate 5 percent of the sales made through the group's website to the Center.

"Every purchase made online for books, music, videos, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, and electronics at the site will automatically send 5% of the sales to the CCBLBT People," the AFA said in a message to its supporters.

"The agreement is an indication that Wal-Mart is totally committed to supporting the homosexual movement," the AFA said.

The conservative advocacy group complains that Wal-Mart also gave a "generous cash donation" to the Northwest Arkansas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, helping to provide a place where homosexuals can come together to "socialize."

The AFA says Wal-Mart should have remained neutral in the cultural battle over homosexual marriage.

It says Wal-Mart made an "ideological" decision, not a business decision.

My internet connection was down for awhile so I'm just catching up.

Actions have consequences. WalMart is paying them because AFA does like what WM has done

Exactly. That's what the AFA wants to get out to like minded folks.

I was a little leary of using the term donation, but being in a hurry and all... It's probably better termed a pass-thru fee. It's definitely a way to get more business but the cost to our culture is the issue the AFA and others have.

I really don't care who supports AFA or who they support, and I don't care who WalMart supports when it has no impact on me.

And that's for you. Others, such as those who support the AFA, see doing business with a gay organization as something that affects the culture of our nation, and that affects others. As Paul said to the Corinthian church, bad company corrupts good morals. Of course we might disagree as to what denotes bad character...

I'm starting to find customer service more appealing than savings. The WM here has irritated the heck out of me. Crappy manager.

(If you're going to boycott every business that doesn't agree with 100% you'd better start growing your own food, hitching up the oxcart and weaving your own linens.

You outliers remind me of my toddler grand daughter who thinks she controls the ocean tides when she raises her arms on the seashore.)

Well the Amish do do what you are suggesting and for a simple lifestyle they seem to live rather well! Maybe we should do more to emulate Amish folk!

Ford did something like this and they weren't attacked by AFA, IIRC.

You don't remember correctly.

Just for the record, Target has an atrocious return policy.

Maybe I missed it in the other posts, but the way I see it is that "the 5%" (that some here say is no big deal) gets passed on to the rest of us who don't make their purchases through that homosexual org's website. Why should Wal-Mart be favoring one group over another? Sure, this is a free market, and the Company is free to do something this, but at the same time, we consumers are JUST AS FREE to choose to object to the company's new way of doing business.

Some of you make it sound as if those who object to Wal-Mart's jump into gay politics are unAmerican, or practically communist for boycotting them. We are not freagin' robots forced to choose the products we buy, based on the price alone...bowing down before Wal-Mart.

Choice is what the free-market is all about, and if people don't want to buy stuff at Wal-Mart for whatever reason their heart desires, then it's fine with me.

WalMart has one goal and one goal only, PROFIT.

Wal-Mart's position on this issue, is NOT a business one but an ideological one... and it is obvious.

You should read this post, carefully and fully.

I made my decision to boycott Wal-Mart about a month ago.

It's been very difficult, because we used to be able to buy most of what we needed there, being a Super Wal-Mart.

Now we shop at their competitors.

We will not shop Wal-Mart again until they change their pro-gay stance.

We have many friends and family doing the same thing.

I know these people, and they will stick to their values.

They're not. It's an affiliate program. Most large online businesses have them. It's a way to direct traffic to their site, and make a few bucks for the guy who has the link on his website.

Yeah, I just saw that in the other thread. But none-the-less, if anyone wants to boycott a company for the policies the company takes, its fine with me. Boycotting a company is not "un-American" or communist, just cause libs traditionally are the ones do it.

It's the consumer's perogative tho choose when, where, what, and how to buy products. The free-market will not die because some Christians don't want to go to Wal-Mart anymore.

Glad to hear it. We made our decision a few months ago and have stuck to it. It's not always easy, but we knew that when we made our decision.

The reasons Al-Qaeda hates us have absolutely nothing to do with Wal-Mart. They hate us because we're not fundamentalist muslims like them. They'd hate us even if there were never such a thing as Wal-Mart, or gay people for that matter. Yes, social conservatives are being consistent, but being upset about a store is silly.

I don't find boycotts to be un-American, I just have a problem with misleading information being utilized to promote them.

--Why Wal-MART gets involved in social/Political issues is beyond me.......--

Sounds like a business decision. It is common practice to reward sites that send business your way via clickable links.

Add the fact that they are helping put 1 trillion dollars in the hands of the Chinese. We should consider that before we buy anything!

We are going broke saving money!

I'd agree with that for the most part. My point was that Walmart supports a homosexual organization and has given cash $25K, I think, to another homosexual organization. From what I remember reading about Al-Qaeda, they hate us for a number of reasons, one of which is the freedom some of us abuse and others enable.
