Not to hijack this thread with Rudy talk, but honestly, I'm about as socially conservative as you can get and I think Rudy would be incredibly effective as a leader.

I lived in NYC during his time as mayor. He was incredibly effective and just the kind of fighter we all complain that we don't have in office. He takes it to his political enemies and will not back down.

Rudy is a man of his word and if he said he was going to appoint conservative judges, not only would he do it, but he'd ram them DOWN THE THROAT of the Dems. No namby pamby bullcrap with him.

The only thing that sinks him in my book is the anti-gun stuff. In NYC, it's practically a given that all pols are anti-gun, but that's no excuse to the national audience. I wonder what his answer would be to that.

McAwful? Oh, yeah Steele would do a bang-up job on him. I look forward to watching McAwful run Hillary's to-be-failed '08 bid. Steele can reenergize the Pubbies for '08!

Not sure we are talking about Newt as POTUS. Didn't realize you had to "run" to become Chair of the RNC. The fact that Newt could never win as POTUS, is exactly why he would be PERFECT at the RNC.

Lets not "waste" Steele at the RNC. Give him the national stage. Rush, if you are out there, put the bug in Newt's ear. We NEED his genius.

Hello, Everyone:

Man, this is a tough house. Mehlman worked like a dog for the GOP and clearly brought home a lot of winners. The guy was always a class act and fought hard for the cause and never whined or cried or threw anyone under the bus. I've got a lot of respect for what he did.

If he's going to work with Rudy, that's serious news. Mehlman is one of the most experienced national campaigners in the Republican Party. I'd think any Republican considering a run for the Big One would want Mehlman on the inside of the tent.

Bets over here are Karl, by Monday

He's not that easy to replace. And he won't go entirely. Bush is just too loyal for that.

But, yes, he should go. Sooner than later. He was in middle of a lot of problems with Republicans in Congress.

I think the GOP congress has effectively lameducked Bush already as far as leading the party. I think they're the ones shoving Mehlman out. The RCCC has been gutted of the lib RINO congressmen that made us so mad. The new conservative congressional majority is going to tell Bush what they want. If he doesn't like it, tough. I think they've had quite enough of little Karl coming down to the Hill to twist their arms. And Bush can't run again. They don't need Bush. But he needs them very badly.

He didn't resign and his term is up in January anyway. Is this really news?

Just like another former RNC chairman who's wrong on the issues.

I love Allen. Thought he was a class act today during his concession. Was taking a dig at Gillespe as campaign mngr.

After hearing Newt on Hannity today (he spoke about how dumb it was not to have Rummy resign two weeks ago; might've saved the house and senate)

Actually, Newt was repeating Schumer who said the same last night on O'Reilly. Surprising as there was no payoff for him to admit it.

Actually our best last hope would be to have GWB resign, Cheney takes over, Condi becomes VP where she can shut the hell up, Bolton becomes Sec. State and General Honore retires from his post and becomes the Secretary of Defense.
James Baker goes away with all of his idiot 41 buddies and we kick some ass in '08!
There you go! I can go back to bed and keep dreaming now.

You have no problem with Rudy being pro abortion, pro partial birth abortion, pro homosexual marriage, or pro amnesty for illegal immigrant invaders?

Don't get me wrong, I like Rudy, but I don't think he would do well on a national stage. That's why I think he could have done the GOP, the nation, and the world a favor by unseating Hillary. It's too late for that, so we do need to find a useful role for his leadership abilities, just not as a presidential candidate.

What did he say about Gillespie? Clearly the campaign was an unmitigated disaster in the post-macaca days. Still, I think Allen should re-key up to run in '08. He is a good man, a fine candidate and certainly not "damaged goods." What do you think?

Ken Mehlman did a great job for Bush-Cheney in 2004 and was rewarded with the GOP Chairmanship. Those are the facts.

There were many factors that contributed to the 2006 debacle. Ken Mehlman's performance had little or nothing to do with what happened. The RNC was not short of money. The Republican base turned out. We lost a few close elections because the independents went the other way and the Libertarians took some votes off the other end.

Ken Mehlman deserves better treatment than he is getting here.

You are so right. There is really no reason for ANY conservative to "carry water" (as Rush put it) for Bush or Rove anymore. The message is clear! Get back to your roots and you WILL win. As my tagline says, Go Conservative or Go Home!
