Outcome Uncertain in 8 House Races
Breitbart.com ^ | November 10, 2006 | Philip Elliot

Eight House races remain without winners after Tuesday's election, with Republican incumbents in tight contests to keep their seats and state officials not rushing to end the dispute.

Rep. Deborah Pryce, a member of the House Republican leadership, is ahead in her central Ohio race by 3,536 votes. In the Columbus, Ohio- area, elections officials are delaying the count of more than 9,000 provisional ballots by one day so it doesn't disrupt the much-vaulted Ohio State-Michigan football game on Nov. 18.

Elections officials in that district will start counting Nov. 19.

Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, who called Democratic Rep. John Murtha a coward, is ahead of her challenger by 2,862 votes. Rep. Barbara Cubin, who threatened to slap her wheelchair-bound Libertarian opponent after a debate, is ahead by fewer than a thousand votes in her Wyoming contest.

Of the eight uncalled races, only one _ Joe Courtney's challenge to Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in Connecticut _ gives a Democratic challenger the lead. In that race, Courtney is ahead by a scant 166 votes. Almost a quarter of a million votes were cast.

A Thursday recount in Hebron, Conn., gave Simmons one more vote. Recounts were scheduled in 74 other towns through the weekend.

In Florida, a recount is set to begin Wednesday in Rep. Katherine Harris' former district. Republican Vern Buchanan has a 373-vote lead and has declared victory over Democrat Christine Jennings. The Associated Press has declared Buchanan the winner.

In Georgia, first-term Democratic Rep. John Barrow, facing a rematch against former Republican Rep. Max Burns, leads by fewer than 600 votes.

In Washington state, the count in a suburban Seattle district was delayed by heavy flooding, leaving incumbent Republican Rep. Dave Reichert ahead of challenger Darcy Burner three days after voting ended.

Other races that remain undecided include North Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes' campaign against Larry Kissell, separated by 449 votes; and New Mexico Rep. Heather Wilson's race, where Democrat Patricia Madrid trails by about 1,600 votes.

That Buchanan race is unreal. People say they meant to vote for Buchanan but couldn't find his name because they were confused with the new machines. So the election officials are saying he would have won even tho he didn't win.

Only in Florida.

Yes, every vote counts.

Also, the number is more like ten, since they do not count Wilson and Hayworth in this.

I though JD Hayworth was waiting for some ballots to be counted also.

He is. They've counted 6,000 votes since yesterday. There are still about 100,000 waiting to be counted.

"Anyone notice that the dems aren't conceding gracefully like the republicans did?"

YES.

Any race with a greater than 1,000 vote margin is really not that close, that is .5% or more if there were 200,000 votes cast. It is shameful that Pryce's opponent hasnt conceded.

The only ones that could possible flip would be the Simmons race (egads, I thought he pulled it out) and Buchanan.

Wilson v Madrid etc. , that's a 1,400 vote margin ... she won a close race. Well done, Heather Wilson.

"Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, who called Democratic Rep. John Murtha a coward,"

Isn't this libel? I was watching that incident live and she never came out and said, "John Murtha, you are a coward" though the Marine's quote implied as much--did she actually call him a coward at another time, and I just missed it?

MSM and Move-on say it's over and that is what counts.

You apparently don't understand how important the OSU-Michigan game is in Colombus, OH.

I doubt you will hear either candidate voice any complaints over the delay.

These are their constituents, and they are wise to understand what is important to them.

Ah, nevermind, takes 2/3s of both the House and Senate to do it.

Wilson has declared victory as she is up 1600+ votes and there are only about 4,400 in-liue-of and provisional ballots. Midrid would have to get 75%+ of the remaining ballots and that is not going to happen.

Yes, there were 250,000 provisional and mail in ballots to be counted.

People, relax. The ONLY thing that has to change is the GOP run squeaky clean candidates -- and find some scandal on Democrats -- and the result reverses.

Pay attention to the exit polls. The #1 issue of voters was corruption scandals. Not conservatism. Not liberalism. Corruption.

Get squeaky clean and the rightward bias of the US as a whole will return Congress to the GOP.

"Rep. Barbara Cubin, who threatened to slap her wheelchair-bound Libertarian opponent after a debate, is ahead by fewer than a thousand votes in her Wyoming contest."

I don't know what happened, and Cubin should have kept her cool, but it these Libertarian candidates really do damage in close red-state races. They basically do nothing but take votes from the Republican candidate and say things that make the Republican look bad. I can see why Cubin might have been furious with the Libertarian candidate.

"Conservative" third parties should do what the Conservative Party in NY used to do -- force the GOP to nominate someone who the Conservative party would be willing to endorse and then not run their own candidate.

They would run their own candidate only if the race wasn't going to be close, if the Republicans nominated a real liberal bozo, or if they genuinely thought they could win (which they sometimes did -- something no Libertarian candidate will ever do.)

Exactly. Every seat counts.

Given the horrendous arithmetic in the Senate in 2008, every focus should be placed on regaining the House. Therefore, every seat we have now is a plus and brings us one vote closer to the majority.
