ATLANTIC CITY — Mayor Bob Levy has knowingly misrepresented his military record to family, friends, reporters and the public for decades.

As an Atlantic City lifeguard and as a candidate for mayor last year, Levy claimed he had served during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army’s elite Special Forces, more familiarly known as the Green Berets. In campaign literature distributed last year, he claimed he had won medals as a Green Beret.

None of that was true.

Levy — who has an otherwise distinguished military service record — was never a member of the Army’s Green Berets, he told The Press this week

From the article: publicly available file I wasn't sure what this meant- the reporter should have made it clear that the file in question either originated with the mayor or from officials at archives. Also as someone pointed out up the thread- clerks could have doctored even the official records. In the book Stolen Valor, Burgett (sp) came across some that he checked into and their official record was not even accurate. This just sounds a little off to me- not eager to believe anything about this man's military career now. That is the problem with lying- ruins the liars credibility.

There is no such thing as a "POS leg" to use your crude expression. Some of us are extremely proud of being legs. At least we don't run around ignorantly insulting others who served our nation at difficult times in dangerous places.

The guy had a CIB. That means something where I come from. God knows why he thought he needed to make anything up, but I do know that PTSD is absolutely for real./

I've jumped out of plenty of planes and been to worse places than jump school. I just thought it was an absurd way to go to war. But that's just a personal thing, and plenty of my best friends and some of the best men and women I've met wear jump wings. But to reiterate, there is no such thing as a "POS leg."

Thanks for your civilized response to the "POS leg" comment. I had a lot less pleasant reply for the "person" who posted that.

proud former leg.

1980 - After successfully resuscitating an infant at the States Avenue Beach in August, Levy claims to a Press of Atlantic City reporter, “I was a Green Beret in Vietnam and I guess I’ve taken a few lives. It feels good to be on the other side this time.”

And no NJ media outlet ever even thought of checking to make sure it was true?

We had our own problem like this earlier this year. Remember Speedy?

No. I don't. But I think the point is that this came out just after the election. And, of course, they'll spin this and then make sure the electorate forgets this "old news" by the time he comes up again.

unstinkin beleivable- but being a democrat, I'm sure that he'll be speedily elected and promoted somewhere. Democratic resume: Have you ever served in the military? (If the answer is yes, don't apply, if the answer is no, then apply but lie) Do you support the NSA? (If you feel that it's no bodies business what anybody does, move to the front of the line)...

tlb. If his record is correct I honor his service but this section of the article makes me pause.

On Oct. 10, The Press, Simmons and others received Levy’s military record. After several experts reviewed Levy’s file, including former members of Special Forces, a reporter gave Morici the records on Oct. 16.

A reporter told him that Levy’s military record seemed to indicate Levy had not served with Special Forces. Within an hour, Morici was on the phone. “You better open up your ears, now, OK?” Morici told the reporter. “Legal action will be taken if you proceed with this story, by our office.”

Later that day, Atlantic City Solicitor Kimberly A. Baldwin faxed a two-page letter demanding that the newspaper “cease and desist from printing any article alleging or implying that Mayor Levy’s military service did not include an assignment to Special Forces. Should such article appear in your newspaper, the mayor is prepared to take swift legal action, including but not limited to a defamation action seeking monetary damages.”

Ah, yes, the Remington Rangers.

The CIB would be easy to check out IF someone with an Army background looked at his 201 file. From what I read in the article, and Lord knows the reporters could've gotten thnings all screwed up, his MOS was in commo. That seems pretty clear and consistent.

I'll bet the CIB is faked. Doesn't mean he wasn't shot at, but only Infantry MOS's qualify. And serving at least 30 days in a combat zone doesn't trump the fact that it is a branch specific badge.

Combat Infantryman’s Badge, given after at least 30 days in a combat zone, given after at least 30 days in a combat zone

I think that is bunk as well.

From Army.mil: The CIB is Awarded to personnel in the grade of Colonel or below with an infantry or special forces military occupational specialty who have satisfactorily performed duty while assigned as a member of an infantry/special forces unit, brigade or smaller size, during any period subsequent to 6 December 1941 when the unit was engaged in active ground combat.

The article says he was Signal, not an 11B (Infantry) or 18 series (SF)

This guy's story stinks to high heaven.

The local papers have the document from the military stating his service, in their newspaper, but so far i have not been able to find it on any of their web sites. If I can find it I'll post it here.

Take a look at this.

1964 - Levy leaves Atlantic City High School to join the Army, beginning a 20-year military career. He later said the resort’s high school principal forced him to leave the school.

1966-1967 - Bob Levy’s first tour of Vietnam. He is assigned to the headquarter’s detachment of the first aviation battelion, first infantry division as first a wireman, then switchboard operator.

1970-71 - Levy’s second tour in Vietnam; he is a village and hamlet communications advisor. Levy has said he lived in villages and performed missions with special forces personnel.

1978 - In March, Levy assumes the role of commander for the Atlantic City Army recruiting station after six years as a hometown recruiter.

1980 - After successfully resuscitating an infant at the States Avenue Beach in August, Levy claims to a Press of Atlantic City reporter, “I was a Green Beret in Vietnam and I guess I’ve taken a few lives. It feels good to be on the other side this time.”

1984 - Levy is honorably discharged.

You guys are going to have to sort this one out. I don't have enough knowledge of the military to sort it all out.

More on Levy.Looks like NJ and him are perfect together.

2004 - A lifelong Republican, Levy switches parties in December.

2005 - After former City Council President Craig Callaway’s sudden withdrawal from the mayoral race in March, Levy fills the vacancy with hopes of improving ethics and promises “safe, clean streets.”

2006 - Levy is sworn in as mayor at the start of the new year.

2006 - After several members of city council plead guilty to bribery charges, Levy works to distance himself from the corruption, saying, “City Council does not run city government. I am the chief executive officer of this city. I run the city.” Levy is not named as a target in the federal investigation.

As I have written for months, Jersey elects more crooks and has them indicted than any other state. Levy, sure, and Menendez and every North Jersey Dem pol one can think of. It is sickening that good Pubs keep losing in Jersey but that is now just a fact with Jersey being an inane Blue state until eternity!

--We had our own problem like this earlier this year.--

Also, Dick Mountjoy (Feinswine's GOP Senate opponent this year) was savaged by the Enemedia. His sin? Mountjoy's campaign literature mentioned that he'd served on the battleship Missouri.

He received some training aboard the Missouri, and was then stationed on a destroyer. Big deal! That's nothing compared to what this crook Levy said.

Repeat after me, Sheeple:

There is no Lib Media Bias ---D Good, R bad.
