My take on it mirrors my Jewish husband's anger, nothing else.

Someone yesterday posted a letter written to the Washington Times about why Senator Allen lost - or rather who did not vote for him. The point: Many conservatives voted for Mr. Webb because they were upset with Senator Allen and President Bush.

Virginia was one of the eight states that carried questions about maintaining marriage as between one man and one woman. Well, that question passed in Virginia with great ease. So, the letter writer to the Times, who is also a Freeper, contended that many of the people who voted for the marriage question voted against Mr. Allen. His thinking being that mostly conservatives would vote "yes" on the marriage issue.

Does that help?

Yesterday we were told to blame women for the Webb victory. So which is it?

Female voters played key role in midterms - THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Exactly. In my own large company which works on government projects, we have many Muslims, American born, with very high level security clearances.

A secretary of the Navy that was out on his butt in less than a year. It's a shame that Reagan had too much class to fire him outright.

He's a jerk and an ass and anyone who let the WaPo do to Allen -- attacking his MOTHER twice -- has no honor at all.

He was out on his butt because he resigned rather than submit to reductions in the fleet.

I didn't say I'd have voted for him. I said we should probably keep an open mind, because I think he's going to be more of a problem for them than for us.

The only blame belongs to Allen himself. He was way out in front and ready to coast to victory until he started mouthing stupid comments. Its sad that he is gone but he alone was at fault. His attempted smear campaign painting Webb as a porno writer backfired. People are not that stupid to fall for such tactics. He did not act like a statesman and he paid for it,even seeing his presidential ambitions go down the drain.

He doesn't play well with others. He's a military veteran in the vein of Lt. Kerry, Col. Murtha, Gen. Clark, etc. etc. etc.

He is an ass. Yes, he is their ass, but he's still Senator Ass and will be for 6 long years.

Frankly, I hope he doesn't get his way very quickly. He'll quit like he did before and we'll be rid of him.

"How dare you reduce MY navy? Unless you want to get all the sluts from Annapolis out, I won't have anybody deciding how many boats we need but me. Who does this `president' think he is?"

Wouldn't that lend himself to being more of a problem for them than for us?

Allen didn't "mouth stupid comments". He said a nonsense word and the WaPo didn't let go, attacking Allen's mother. His octogenarian MOTHER.

And say what you like, quoting Jim Webb's OWN PUBLISHED WRITINGS does not constitute a smear campaign. You would think a newspaper might actually read the damned things.

I will never forgive the Washington Post for smearing Allen's MOTHER twice in this campaign and Webb standing by and letting it happen. The Samurai's knew what to do with themselves when they committed such dishonor.

Senator Ass will get a vote, same as the rest. I will get a lot of Schadenfraude as he makes McCain look like a team player, but the fact is we will all have to put up with his nonsense for 6 years until he runs again, in which case he will tell everybody to forget what he's actually done and hide behind his medals.

Actually, no. More likely to my mind, the biggest factor in the difference between the higher vote in the marriage question and the vote for Allen was the black vote. I would expect that we would find that blacks voted FOR the Democrat by a wide margin and also voted FOR the marriage question by a wide margin, and were the single biggest factor in that voting difference, although there are undoubtedly other, smaller blocs in that difference as well, including perhaps a small percentage of frustrated conservatives.

And before that it was the military voters. Seems to me we're looking to blame a lot of people for Allen screwing up and losing.

I do think Allen should have had enough political savvy - and control of himself- not to rise to the bait. His angry response made it appear that there was something wrong with having a Jewish heritage.

I have said for years on this forum that Allen was a decent guy and conservative, but dumb as a board. Only his manner was Reaganesque. Reagan actually had a brain and his writings reveal a powerful intellect.

"smearing Allen's MOTHER twice in this campaign"

This is the attitude I'm talking about, which infuriated my husband - that calling someone Jewish is seen as a "smear", because there's apparently something wrong with being Jewish. :(
