Canada has its moonbats. One Chris Hedges fears those eevil Christians' malignant influence on Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper will leave Canada... a very, very bad place. You see, its also all President Bush's fault!

Wow, Harper seems like a fine pol. I wonder if there's something to prime ministers from former British territories with last names starting with H.

Stephen Harper - my kind of guy!

See if Stephen Harper would like the Republican nomination for President of the United States in '08. We don't have any likely candidates.

The Prime Minister, who has begun, in very un-Canadian fashion, to close his speeches with the words "God Bless Canada," is also a born-again Christian. What does this author know about Canada? Like the USA our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values.

The author is writing about Canada. He need not be a 7th generation Canadian to do so. Get over it. We in America take daiily hits from foreigners - some informed and some not. Maybe you should be flattered that someone noticed you and thought to write about it. Additionally, Canada was founded upon Christian values, but Trudeau fixed all that, didn't he.

Maybe get at least a month on FR under your belt before lecturing anyone newbie?
The poster has every bit as much justification in objecting to uninformed commie potshots aimed at Canada as Americans had when the likes of Carolyn Parrish dumped on your country from north of the border.
Seemingly, the difference is Canadian conservatives relentlessly hounded Parrish over her vulgar anti-Americanism for as long as she remained in national office while your take with the offense reversed is "get over it".

One imagines, short of claiming direct descent from Karl Marx, it would be tough to have a more impressive moonbat pedigree:
Chris Hedges, a senior fellow at The Nation Institute, a former foreign correspondent for the New York Times and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, is the author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (Anchor).
He has spent the past two years researching and writing about the Christian right. His new book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, will be published by the Free Press in January. ~ from The Nation's website

I don't know that I would call PM Harper a 'Neocon', would you? He seems more along the lines of a traditional conservative, smaller govt being the key, pro-defense, and traditional values.
Michael Ignatieff, a prolific author on ethnic conflict, a former Harvard professor and a vocal supporter of the Iraq War.
This is something I didn't know, and is pretty interesting.

Canada has a small military because they know we will defend them. Just like Europe, they take us for granted and then bad-mouth us at every chance.

Count Iggy's initial supportive position on Iraq as well as his subsequent back-peddling & ceaseless fault-finding with respect to the Bush administration's conduct of the war are virtually identical to Queen-in-waiting Hillary's and others on America's not-quite-moonbat, more just openly opportunistic, nearer-left.
With both, it's like the old joke that begins "once you can fake sincerity ..."

Those attitudes are changing FRiend. Canada has had more years under liberal rule, but keep in mind we had 8 years under the Toon, which produced similar results.

Seemingly, there's a pattern here:
Canadian liberals bad-mouth America ... exactly like American liberals.

Agreed. My brother-in-law used to bill himself as the last Canadian Nationalist. Looks like he finally got company. However, I am still of the opinion that some Canadians, like most Europeans know, or think they know that we will always come to their aid. Therefore, they can create a little socialist paradise and bad-mouth us loutish Americans. It's irritating.

While most of Canada's Conservatives are fairly patriotic, most are also quite pro-American.
Few, if any, are "nationalists" - at least not in the accepted economic and/or cultural sense of the term.
Also, unlike Stateside, where it's not unusual to find xenophobic morons at both ends of the political spectrum, up here virtually all of ours are way out in left field.
As for comparing "some Canadians" to "most Europeans", socialists, like liberals - and not that, technically, there's much difference - are more or less the same wherever you go.
Accordingly, it's not surprising, Canada's would have similar views & attitudes to Europe's. And, once again & like those Stateside, all would hate America, blame Bush, pander to Islamofascists, worship diversity, etc, etc, etc.
Although we may have more of them than you & Europe way more than both of our countries, it's like the above is their "job description" anywhere you happen to find the vermin.

So, in other words, Harper wants to take Canada back to what made it a country.
To: alarm rider
Canada has a small military because the leftists up here decimated in the interest of social programs. We carried our weight at one time. We (Conservatives) hope to get there again.
