On the 30 March 2004, the 2nd Squadron, 71st Cavalry (10th Mountain Division) was inactivated. The unit was reflagged as the 1st Battalion, 89th Cavalry (10th Mountain Division).

Supposedly the 5th Squadron was going to be renamed the 2nd when it got back from Iraq.
