At the same time, Pelosi's decision not to promote Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., an African American, could ruffle her relations with black lawmakers.
Hastings was acquitted of federal bribery charges as a federal judge in the 1980s but impeached by the Senate and removed from the bench. However, that does not mean that Pelosi will promote the panel's senior Democrat, Rep. Jane Harman of Venice, with whom she has frosty relations.
Instead, Democratic aides said the top contenders are Reps. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, Sanford Bishop Jr. of Georgia and Norm Dicks of Washington state. Reyes has the edge, Pelosi allies indicated. He was a 26-year agent and supervisor with the U.S. Border Patrol before his 1996 election to Congress, and is a senior member of the intelligence panel.
Harman, who's been the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee for four years, could not be reached for comment.
Pelosi declined comment other than to say that Hastings "has served our country well, and I have full confidence that he will continue to do so."
Hastings promised to work with whomever Pelosi chooses, but said he was disappointed and added cryptically: "Sorry, haters, God is not finished with me yet."
Pelosi's decision -- expected within days -- on who will run the secretive and high-stakes panel when Democrats take power in January is seen as an important test of her leadership because it signals how she intends to enforce discipline among fractious House Democrats.

Norm Dicks is an extreme liberal like the rest, but at least he is Pro-U.S. Can't say that about most of their caucus.
It will be difficult to play the race card because John Conyers(D) who is black wrote extensively in 1989 that he had made sure that racism was not a factor in his decision to seek impeachment for Hastings on the basis of lying to the court, that Hastings was no longer worthy of a position of power, and that the corrupt (Hastings) must not be allowed to govern. If they try to play the race card now, they must make Conyers a liar and corrupt. It's a lose-lose situation for the race baiters.

If Pelosi holds and acts on grudges, as evidenced in her actions concerning Hoyer and Harman, how can one expect Pelosi to act in a bipartisan or civil manner with Republicans?

The republicans don't get to vote for the speaker if that is what you mean, it's a majority thing.
No, the whole House votes for the Speaker. It's usually a party line vote, but it doesn't have to be. A faction of the majority party can bring down their party's leader by cutting a deal with the minority party (which almost happened to Newt once).
If the Republicans get such on offer, they should agree to it but make sure just enough Republicans vote Pelosi so she gets in anyway. That way the Democrats can keep themselves busy with reprisals.
This sounds garbled to me. I understand he was removed from the bench--was he impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate and removed? Was he acquitted in a separate court action? Anyone have a clear synopsis of events they can offer?

The federal charge is a seperate issue from the impeachment. Hastings was found not guilty by the jury, then impeached by the house of representatives, and convicted and removed from office by the senate.

Nobody would even think about bringing that up....
Perhaps Rumsfeld doesn't consider himself a political operative and he wouldn't act without the President's ok in any case. He was not the Republican Secretary of Defense but Secretary of Defense of the United States.
The bottom line is the Treason Media still has too much influence and it allowed the Party of Treason to paint the GOP as Right Wing nutcases and itself as Moderate-Conservative.
I am astonished that Republicans can get elected anywhere at anytime given the power of this media still.
Another few years of undermining it will be required before the Conservative movement will progress much further.
