As tech savvy as he seems to be, shouldn't there be some way he could communicate for help? Cell and GPS often don't work around mountains. We have a lot of 'em here.

Didn't think of that. I hadn't heard about the obviously horrific weather there. News media not reporting it or did I miss something?

Expensive, but there are satelite telephones.
Some expensive new cars ( On- star with GM ?... etc. ) have the hardware installed at the factory.
